I have a 2000 Saab 9-3 SE with 147k miles, I drove it to the store with no issues. When I came out of the store and drove it about a mile everything was fine, then all of a sudden the car "bucked" and the check engine light came on. I immediately pulled over and checked the dipstick and gave the engine bay a once over, everything appeared fine. I babied it home and noticed that it is idling at about 850 RPM's as opposed to 1000 RPM's. Also the turbo isnt spooling very much, if at all, can someone please help!?! I intend on taking it to Advanced Auto to check the codes, but Im freaking out in the mean time.

I would do the same thing take it to auto zone or Oreilly and see what those guys have to say. I usually take to a couple different shop to do free scan tool. most of the time they all say the same problem.
But Sounds like your car might have a sensor problem. could be MAF or BAF sensor. not too sure.. but you should definitely take it for scan tool test.

If the engine is still running without noises , stop worrying
the turbo could have died in which case have it replaced
yes the fault codes may reveal the area of the fault but if it is a mechanical failure , it may not show up
engine lights report on engine AND transmission faults so the indicated problem may be electronic related to the transmission controls

SOURCE: Check Engine Light!

Sounds like you will need to have the codes read at SAAB dealer to confirm no fautly sensors have caused this to happen.
There may still be a bad component that is triggering lamp.

SOURCE: check engine and check gearbox lights

As Saab is in relation to Subaru.....the first thing I would check is the spark plugs, ignition coil and spark plug wires. Have a technician check them for carbon tracking as if you are getting some hesitation and is inconsistant you may very well have a missfire. Minor problem but could be costly depending upon if it's got a single coil or one for each cylinder.

SOURCE: I have a '96 SAAB 900 SE Turbo auto-trans that is

my 96 900se turbo auto trans was doing the same thing. whats most likely is that the shifter cable is not fully letting the car grab the park gear, which won't let it turn on. or it may be the neutral safety swtich that needs a good cleaning or replacement. I hope this helps, in my case it was the shifter cable.

First thing to do is have someone check the computer for trouble codes.
You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
You can check for spark at the plugs and the fuel pressure.
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, fuel pump, or a list of other things.

Engine knocking noise in 2000 saab 9-3 SE?

It's a common problem with these cars i am actually fixing mine as of now. That car is all about oil pressure and when it is low you'll start to get a tap and or what sounds like a knock due to the lifters not having enough pressure. Try taking your oil pan off and check your oil pick up line going from the oil pan to the turbo. A lot of times it gets a lot of sludge build up and makes the pressure little to none. If that looks clear check the slump inside the oil pan and see if that has sludge build up. Well hope this helped

The message light does not check all internal systems.

Have someone at a local parts store do a free code scan for you, this will tell you what code is making the light come on, and what that code indicates is wrong.
