2004 Pontiac Grand Am 6cycl 3.4L, overheating issues.

Sounds like you had a sticking thermostat when you replaced the waterpump causing an air pocket. Replace the thermostat, and jack the front of the car so that the radiator cap is highest part of the cooling system. Then run the car and burp the air out of the coolant system.

Replace thermostat

follow upper radiator hose to aluminum housing this is where the thermostat is. be sure engine is cool remove radiator cap or reservoir cap if no cap on radiator disconnect upper hose from thermostat housing. remove two bolts in housing and remove housing. replace thermostat and reassemble. when finished refill anti- freeze leave cap off and start vehicle with heat on high. run the vehicle like this until air stops bubbling out of coolant and heat is hot steadily. continue topping off coolant during this process and be sure cooling fans engage before completion. then youre all done

I need a diagram for the thermostat on the 2000 pontiac grand am 3400

The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing which is located on the intake manifold under the throttle body. If you have small hands, you can remove the air intake tube from the throttle body and the exhaust crossover heat shield. Once there out of the way, you can remove one of the bolt and losses the other to slide the thermostat housing off to replace the thermostat.

If you can not get to the bolts, then your going to have to remove the throttle body and don't forget the order the new throttle body gasket also. Not that the coolant temperature sensor is on the intake manifold in front of the thermostat housing, so take caution not to damage it when removing the housing.

Thank you for using fixya and keep us posted.
