Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor OPERATION The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is mounted in the intake manifold and sends engine temperature information to the ECM. The ECM supplies 5 volts to the coolant temperature sensor circuit. The sensor is a thermistor which changes internal resistance as temperature changes. When the sensor is cold (internal resistance high), the ECM monitors a high signal voltage which it interprets as a cold engine. As the sensor warms (internal resistance low), the ECM monitors a low signal voltage which it interprets as warm engine.

    TESTING

Fig. 1: Submerge the end of the temperature sensor in cold or hot water and check the resistance

Fig. 2: Temperature sensor resistance values

Remove the ECT sensor from the vehicle.
Immerse the tip of the sensor in container of water.
Connect a digital ohmmeter to the two terminals of the sensor.
Using a calibrated thermometer, compare the resistance of the sensor to the temperature of the water. Refer to the engine coolant sensor temperature vs. resistance illustration.
Repeat the test at two other temperature points, heating or cooling the water as necessary.
If the sensor does not meet specification, it must be replaced.

What does temp switch 2 do on 1988 22r

EFI temp switches, are covered in the FSM
but they do the same on all cars
EFI
it lets the ECU know of the coolant reaches full temp or partial
and all ECU use that to set fuel mix to perfect as engine warms.
on new cars we use only a single thermistor sensors called ECT (old WTC) to do all that.
this old system is very barbaric, in todays terms

ok did you try rockauto.com
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=1277591&parttype=4748

The 2-valve SOHC 2.4 L (2,366 cc) 22R was produced from 1981 through 1997.
non turbo ,right?
there are up to 4 temp senders.
gauge sender, 1pin
ECT , 2 pin
and 2 temp switchs.
and A/C cut for overheat.
and others.
and if California car 2 or 3 more. see FSM for that. complex.

getting the correct one takes great skill.
id use SMP catalogs to match it.
smp makes many

When jackaroo 1988 is motoring where does the needle in the temperature gauge normally be

If your temp gauge has only the cold (C) or hot (H) letters then the operating range would be the width of the needle under 1/2 way between c and h. If it remains steady at slightly over 1/2 way that would be just the setting of the gauge. How to get to know where the needle would sit at a specific position in relation to water temp. Do the following
Remove the temp sender unit and attach an earth wire to the body of the unit to earth. Place the sender unit in a container of water up to the threads .Put a mercury thermometer in the container beside the sender unit Apply heat to the container and watch the gauge needle move in relation to the thermometer reading. Operating temp will be about 80 degrees C on the thermometer and that would be about 1/2 way on the gauge.

My 1989 Toyota sr5 5 speed problems first off it shutters when u first take off is that normal or do I **** at driving stick and second my temperature gauge goes to allmost over heat then goes back to...

with the temp gauge the sender unit is a resistor that is affected by heat. The hotter the water the less resistance the hotter the reading on the gauge. Knowing that check for a wire shorting out to the sender unit or replace the sender.. If you have a carby it sounds like you have a problem with the accelerator pump not working. This gives a squirt of fuel as you open the throttle to compensate for the extra air coming in to the engine. If you have efi. accelerator position sensor may be a good place to start looking

Temperature Guage, '89 Camry

the cable going from the gauge to the sender unit is an earth return. if you take it off the sender unit wire if the gauge does read hot the sender and earth it out the gauge should go to the hot segment.dont leave this cable to earth very long do it quickly. if the gauge does read it is ok, there is no earth to the petrol tank. if it does not read it will be faulty. hope this helps.

On my 1989 k1500 350 TBI, the engine temp gauge isnt registering anything, but it was the other day, where is the engine temp sensor located?

The sender is on the driver side cylinder head between cylinders 1 and 3. The single wire connector to the sender gets very brittle over time from being subjected to heat from the exhaust manifold. It's somewhat common for them to break. Give that a look as well as the wire to it.
