I have a 1986 Jeep Cherokee 5 speed v6 2.8L engine. Apart from the standard warming it up in the morning cause it has a carburetor, it's started this odd problem lately. It idles fine, but the moment I start accelerating it acts like it's not getting gas. Even if I give it gas in neutral it acts like it isn't giving off any power.
The problem started while I was driving around my neighborhood. Anytime I came to a stop or shifted gears for a few moments it would 'sputter' like it wasn't getting gas then it would kick a little and work fine. Until it got worse and eventually stalled. Then it wouldn't restart right away. Eventually i got it idling again and started checking the vacuum lines and making sure the carburetor was getting air/opening properly. Worked fine after that and drove it home and parked it. The next time I went to drive it the problem was there again.
The engine was recently rebuild about 2 months ago, and it has new vacuum hoses and spark plugs.
Engine
stalling issue at low speeds
This problem
is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and
throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner from NAPA or
Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake
while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will
try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30
minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and
disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base
idle control
