I have a 1996 grand cherokee. engine cranks but wont start. getting nothing on dashboard gauges and getting nothing but dashes on overhead digital gauges except temp. recently had new alternator put on. is the problem electrical and how can i fix it

If it will crank but won't idle then it is the idle air control valve

Is the check engine light coming on, on your dashboard, when you turn the ignition on, before cranking?

Might be your jeep's ecu is bad. Does the check engine light come on your dash, when you turn the ignition key to on, before cranking? If not, the ecu is bad. If the check engine light does come on, it may be the crank sensor is bad on your jeep.

Also check brake switch adjustment, it is the interrupter.

Hi, try disconnecting the engine crank sensor and if your gauges start working then the crank sensor is faulty.

Try turning the engine crank pulley by hand with a wrench. If it turns freely repost with more info and details on the problem.

If it is and the lights aren't working, the problem may be a bad fuse. Check the fuse that controls the dashboard lights Replace the fuse if necessary.
