Disconnect one battery terminal (+ or -) but not both and place a large lamp like a headlamp (12v) in series with the battery terminal that is disconnected and the terminal that you removed. If the lamp lights, you are getting a phantom power drain. If the lamp lights dim, place a smaller lamp like a signal light; 5 or 10 watts or so. If you have an ammeter, use that instead as long as you can read it from the fuse area as you go through this process.

Go to the fuse panel and in order, remove the fuses one by one. When you remove a fuse, and the lamp stays lit, put the same fuse right back. Keep going through all the fuses until you find one that shuts the test light off. When you find the fuse that causes the problem, the circuit that is fed off that fuse is causing the problem. I had same issue and no circuit raised its head.

It is normal for the car to draw about 20 to 50mA which keeps the clock and other presets alive and allows the body computer to accept signals from the remote door lock. This is very little current for a car battery.

On the 00, 01, there is a multifunction relay located (in my 01 anyway) above the fuse area in behind the dash, it's a grey box about the size of a pack of cigarettes. In it there are 4 or 5 relays, one of them monitors battery voltage when the vehicle is shut off. When battery voltage drops below a predetermined voltage, the relay kills the power saving the battery for effective start.

I repaired my multifunction relay board by re soldering all the traces on the PC board. The relay box is about $80 (dealer) if you don't want to tackle this. After I repaired the MF relay box, my trunk worked everytime, sunroof, radio and fuel door. And best of all, my battery drain problem disappeared. Its been 2 years now.

My 00 is doing the exact same thing, the battery drain, started with the radio, now even my ABS and TC plus the air bag lights come on, and I have not been in an accident. Also when these lights are on my speedodometer does not work. Could this be related to the fuse problem?

You have the problem with the MF K134 relay, not the fuses. You may also have a problem and I have posted the solution with your EBCTM (electronic brake control traction module). Check out other replies I posted for no speedo, or TC ABS lights on. It should be there.

SOURCE: Leveling light comes on and blinks

The leveling light is when the catera is trying to adjust it's back end based on weight, so whenever the light comes on you need to park your car and wait until it turns off. If it begins to blink do the same thing. If it doesn't go off in 5 min then go get it checked out by a mechanic, because something could be broken. It is in the manual if this does not make sense.

SOURCE: 2001 cadillac catera ebtcm removal how to

You need to remove the upper rad hose and the battery.
Then, use a torx to remove the 6 screws (hard to get at) which will remove the EBTCM from the brake modulator. You also must disconnect the two electrical connectors (the big one has a slide tab).
There are places you can send the module to and rebuild with warranty. I took a module from a 99' and installed it in my wife's 01'. Now the speedo, odometer, cruise and power steering work perfect and no TCM / ABS light.

My 1997 catera has a battery drain, any idea where i should start looking?

A mechanic would first test the battery for a dead cell, then check each circuit on the car. We usually start with the big circuits such as lights and the alternator, and then go down the list.

I replaced 2 alternators in my 2000 catera...only when it rains does the car not start..the battery is dead as a door nail...can someone help?

Make sure the car is not draining the battery while parked and shut off.
Place a meter across the battery, it should read 12 volts when charged up.
Start the car and it should climb to and read 14 to 14.5 volts. If it doesn't, then the alternator is bad.
