My wife has been told that she needs to have the transaxle fluid and transmission fluid changed. Her 2006 Uplander has only 55K miles on it. Should we get a 2nd opinion?

IF YOU HAVE THE AF23-5 TRANSAXLE OR THE VT25- E VTI. TRANSAXLE YOU NEED A SCAN TOOL TO MONITORING TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE WHILE CHECKING TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE.YOUR VECHICLE TRANSAXLE DONT HAVE A DIP STICK TO CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.YOUR TRANSMISSION HAS A DRAIN PLUG LOCATED BOTTOM OF TRANSAXLE BELOW FORWARD OF THE RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE DRIVEAXLE FACING RIGHT SIDE OF VECHICLE.YOUR VECHICLE HAS TO BE RAISED LEVEL ON A LIFT.TO CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID.YOUR TRANSMISSION IS A DEALERSHIP FIX.WAY TRANSMISSION SET UP DEALERSHIP HAS TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID.
The auto transaxle/differential fluid and filter should be changed every 30,000 miles or 24 months. The transaxle fluid and differential lubricant use the same Dextron III automatic transmission fluid. If you have a three speed automatic transaxle, the transaxle differential has a separate lubricant supply that should be checked every 15,000 miles or every 12 months. By the way........ see if there is a Half Price Books or other used book store in or near your town. I find used repair manuals like Hayes or Chiltons for $8.00 or less all the time. Hope this helps. TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING.TIME FOR TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE IF CAR HAS OVER 100000 MILES .CHECK UNDERNEATH CAR AND SEE IF TRANSMISSION OIL PAN IS WET OR LOOK LIKE PAN GASKET IS LEAKING.YOU NEED TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID.YOUR TRANSMISSION DONT HAVE FILLER TUBE YOU HAVE TO ADD A PINT AT A TIME AND REMOVE CHECK PLUG ON TRANSAXLE LOCATED NEAR THE PAN ADJACENT TO THE ENGINE OIL DRAIN PLUG.THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROCEDURE YOUR CAR HAS TO BE LIFTED UP IN THE AIR ON A LIFT. CAR HAS TO BE LEVEL AND ENGINES HAS TO RUN FIVE MINUTES FOR TRANSMISSION TO BE IN OPERATING TEMPERATURE. ONCE TRANSMISSION GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE REMOVE THE CHECK PLUG.IF NO FLUID COME OUT YOU NEED TO ADD MORE FLUID NO MORE THAN A PINT AT A TIME.IF FLUID POUR OUT CHECK PLUG HOLE YOU HAVE TOO MUCH FLUID IN TRANSMISSION.IF FLUID DRIP A SLOW DRIP YOUR FLUID LEVEL CORRECT.TO ADD FLUID YOU REMOVE THE VENT FILL PLUG ON TOP TRANSAXLE WHERE DIP STICK USED TO BE LOCATED.YOU CAN DO THIS JOB YOUR SELF.YOU NEED TO BE ON LEVEL SOLID GROUND AND YOU NEED JACK STANDS AND A FLOOR JACK. LIKE I SAID THIS IS A DANGEROUS JOB AND YOU NEED ABOUT 12M SOCKET TO REMOVE TRANSAXLE CHECK PLUG.
If you want to burn it up, in about three years
All transmissions require fluid changes, not more than 30,000 miles or three years.
You watch too many commercials
Change the Power Steering Fluid, every three years also
Brake fluid every two years.
Unlikely you'll get 100,000 out of a transaxle even with the fluid changes. Just so I told you so,in the future
I used to own a trans shop. 90% of that work was neglect and some MFG Failures
Transmissions these days need very little maintenance, our fluids are advanced formulas that hold up for an average of 100,000 miles, most vehicle manufactures recommend no maintenance for automatic transaxles these days.As for a transmission flush I don't recommend this because it's an expense that is not needed and possibly could loosen some contaminants setting them loose to possibly clog some of the very small passages in the transaxle requiring full transaxle service, which could include removal, dissassembly, etc of your trans. Now draining and replacing fluid is OK if that makes you feel a peace of mind but normally not needed,if you decide to do that,as far as quantity just note approx. how much fluid is drained and purchase similar amount in quarts and then refill (DO NOT OVERFILL)
start engine, let it warm up to operating temp, then check the transmission dipstick for the correct level, remember the vehicle needs to be on a level surface, hot idiling in park when you check the fluid level. Good luck !
