Usually I find there are two common causes for this problem. If the gauge goes to empty after a fill up but then starts to work and be fairly accurate as the fuel level in the tank drops then it's often the fuel level sending unit which is attached to the fuel pump module inside the tank. I have seen some guages go bad also [actually the servo motor that runs the gauge] but usually the gauge will stick in one spot and rarely move or go to either end of the scale and stick there. A good shop should be able to determine the cause of your problem pretty quickly. Hope this helps and good luck!
A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.
It is most likely your fuel level sending unit has gone bad. It sits inside your fuel tank to tell the fuel guage how much gas you have in the tank.
The sending unit for the gas gauge is in the fuel tank and part of the fuel pump module, it is not sold seperately. Price is around $350.00, 2 hours labor to install the part.
The oxygen sensor has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. There are two possibilities for the gas gauge error, first it could be the in-tank gas level sensor or it could be a defective stepper motor which drives the gauge. A professional scan tool can determine the fuel level being sent by the in-tank sensor, if that disagrees with the gauge, then the stepper motor needs replacing.
