1st.. check fuse for clutch solenoid/relay. 2nd... replace clutch solenoid/relay. 3rd... check for damaged wiring to trransmission or connector to transmission. If all these are correct, see your Ford Dealer.
2doors or 4 doors?
3 speed or 4 speed transmission, I'm assuming its not a manual stick.
as those too can shift slowly on other oddities.
the 3/4 speed can delay shifts if the TV cable sticks or is adjusted wrong, as can the 3sp vacuum modulator vacuum hose fell off.
the 4 speed can delay for , the TCM sees transmission slip.
the 4 speed is electronically shifted , unlike the 3sp.
the 4speed flashes the OD lamp if there are troubles. (means scan it)
ask how.
Here is what the service manual says about the EPC solenoid, the processor looks at allot of different inputs to command the solenoids, such as Throttle Position Sensor, Vehicle Speed Sensors, Transmission Range Sensor and RPM signal, The PCM controls the shift patterns for the transmission. Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) Solenoid The electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid is located on the main control valve body and is controlled by the PCM. The EPC controls line pressure used to apply and release clutches and bands in the transmission. The 2-3 shift solenoid is located on the main control valve body and is switched on and off by electrical signals from the PCM. The 2-3 shift solenoid activates the 2-3 shift valve which controls the automatic shifting between second and third gear. Second gear is established when the 2-3 shift solenoid is switched on. The 2-3 shift solenoid is switched off when vehicle speed increases and requires a second to third gear upshift. The 3-4 shift solenoid is located on the main control valve body and is switched on and off by electrical signals from the PCM. The 3-4 shift solenoid activates the 3-4 shift valve which controls the automatic shifting between third and fourth gear. Third gear is established when the 3-4 solenoid is switched off. The 3-4 shift solenoid is switched on when vehicle speed increases and requires a third to fourth gear upshift.
I have an identical truck, 1991 Ram W150 with a 318 4speed bull low. They're called a bull low (bo low, granny four speed, farmers 4-spd) because theyre really only built for towing heavy loads, theyre a farm tractor transmission. You should never use first unless your towing a load, start in 2nd. I dont rev it too high when I shift mine. Best tranny for offroading by far, it really delivers the torque to crawl up tricky paths.
Check the gear shifter lever. Also check the transmission. Also it indicates linkage problem. The shift lever marker is showing you are in one gear when you are really in another. Check the other gears. Drive down the street with the marker in low see if it changes gears . i.e. it should not change. You can look at the tranny and find the linkage there should be marks on the linkage where the clamps have slipped.
If it cuts off due to it bogging down then it is a transmission problem loading up the motor .Check the transmission. Get the car scanned at www.autozone.com to get the error codes. As per the error codes you can get the exact faulty part replaced. Its free to get car scanned at www.autozone.com service center. Thanks.
the tv cable may need ajust--bands also--trans is part electronic-governor area--do a scan of truck and pick up a repair book @store or library--dont forgit ur the gears r old with mucho miles
I have not had this particular transmission apart, but it sounds like that gear may be locked up.......??? may need to have it fixed. If jeep runs in all the other gears, I would definately believe that it is in the second gear only.
