Save yourself a lot of headache, Just replace the stereo. I've have chased problems like this in the past. Just to find a burnt spot in the computer. / that was in a pt cruiser though./ You can get a better than stock stereo for less than $100:00 these days that can also run your I-pod too !!!! .
If the radio was removed with it off then you don't need to put a code in to it to have it work. If it prompts you for a code try 0000 or you can go on to radio-code.com. There is a few but i think it's like $6.00 and you get to keep the code, not like the dealers. God luck and hope this helps.
the ignition swotch on the end of the lock cylinder inside the bottom of the steering column there is a connector that goes to it,,replacde that switch and relearn the switch,,,,after you replace the switchtry to start the car then let the key go back to the run position and let it sit for 10 minutes do this 3 times with 30 seconds between key starts and on the last one wait 2 minutes when done and they try to start it,,,,so its 3 10 minutes learns with 30 seconds inbetween,,
Saturn Ion's are known for major faulty wiring...This is especially true in the ignition switch when it is cold and the radio going out...The faulty wiring probably ruined your radio...
Check your plugs, check the ign module, test the injectors, take a fuel sample and make sure there isnt water in your fuel, if all these test good perform a compression test. if the compression test fails replace the head. if the compression test is good. check the timing
A door-closed switch is failing 'open', I suppose. Most likely the drivers' side one (which gets the most use?), but it could be any. Replace that ******! (Ask for details at the Saturn Parts counter.)
