its easy just follow the diagram and find the tension pulley and adjust it just enouf to get the belt on then release. for futher help please call 419 689 1114
here are the diagrams for the 2 engines. the first on is for the 24 valve engine, the second is for the 12 valve engine. if your oil filter is short and fat use the first one, if its tall and skinny use the 2nd one.
There are also two serpentine belt types for the 2002 sable. The S and U type engine. Take the old belt with you the the parts store. As for the diagram, I googled it under images and about a dozen correct ones came up. Remember the 2002 sable is the same as the 2002 Tarus.
You need to have an automotive technitian install a new belt because there is a certain path the belt must follow before it will go on, plus the belt must go around the A/c as it is part of the path. You just don't have to use the A/C.
Tell the tech that the belt broke so that he can look for a reason as to why the belt broke.

there should be a diagram of the belt under the hood : ibelieve it is on top of the radiator fan cover.
A merc dealer should be able to give you a print out. Or maybe an auto parts store.
