My windshield wipers (front) on a 2000 dodge grand caravan go off and on on their own. They wont work most of the time but they will just pop on on their own or if u turn the lights or high beams off and on. Sometimes they dont even have to have power they just come on. We have tried to replace the switch on the column checked the fuse box thouroughly and now we are baffled. Do u have any idea what it could be?

My best guess is the switch is bad. Did you replace it? The problem could also be the bcm, but I would test the switch first. Remove it and check it with an ohmmeter.

Turn Signal Switch

CAUTION
The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the air bag or SIR system wiring. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. In order to disarm the air bag system, allow the system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes, before performing any removal procedures.
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from behind the combination switch.
  5. Remove the mounting screws securing the combination switch to the steering column adapter collar.
  6. Remove the combination switch from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the combination switch to the steering column adapter collar. Tighten the combination switch mounting screws.
  2. Reconnect the electrical connector to the combination switch.
  3. Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds and tighten the retaining screws.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.

I would suspect the wiper motor itself. The motor has power all the time and works off the switch to ground for selected speed. Have replaced wiper motors for this same problem. Would check this.

SOURCE: NEEED FUSE FUSE BOX LAYOUT FOR 2003 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN

You can get free owners manuals online at:

http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/howto/articles/120189/article.html

or just type "owners manuals" in your search.

Here is a post I found that worked for my 2005 caravan.

For a 2001 Dodge Caravan: The owner's manual is vague, only stating that all fuses are under the hood in the fuse box, no diagrams. Once you have removed the fusebox cover, the diagrams for what each fuse does is provided under the lid. UNCLEARLY marked is the radio fuse, a 20amp fuse located 2nd row from top to the right of the accessory relay. It is marked: RDO/IP IGN.

I need to replace the windshield wiper blade

The 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan takes 28" wiper blades on both sides front and a 18" rear wiper. See related links below for more information. Since there are over 22 different wiper arm attachments, do not buy wipers just by length only - be sure to lookup exact wiper blade part numbers by vehicle make, model and year for the brand wiper you decide to purchase. This ensures correct length AND correct attachment.

How do i remove the windshield wiper blade

The 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan has the most common hook-end wiper arms. See related links below for installation videos. Also, purchase the replacement blades first and there will be additional instructions/illustrations on the replacement packages. Locate and press the tab or button where the wiper blade is inserted into the hook of the wiper arm and pull wiper blade out of hook. You may have to rotate and flex the blade to make enough clearance for the hook to pass through.

Front wipers stopped working but you can hear the motor run also

If the wipers were buried under snow/ice or frozen to the windshield, you may have blown the red 10 amp fuse located in cavity 9 in the fuse block located on the bottom left side of the instrument panel near the parking brake pedal.
In order of easiest to check:
1) ensure wipers not frozen to windshield.
2) ensure wiper arms are not loose on the pivot stud,
3) check the red 10 amp fuse.
You stated that "you can hear the motor". Which motor do you hear? The engine or the wiper motor?
If you hear the wiper motor, then the fuse is alright. Try 1) and 2) above.
