It's the stepper motors behind the gauges.They were made with plastic gears. GM covers these repairs to 7 years or 70,000 miles so check with your dealer first. If the coverage limit is up they usually charge 300-600 to repair/replace the cluster. There are many independent shops that repair these clusters for under 200. I had mine repaired at gmgaugerepair.webs.com They repair your cluster and have it back in the mail same-day for 125.

The speed sensor can be tested with a scanner. Only take 10 minutes, If it works then your instrument cluster took a dive. Same thing with the RPM. If the scanner sees it then the cluster is bad. Getting it diagnosed properly is your best bet. You can get the cluster rebuilt for alot less than new. modulemaster.com does them.

had the same problem lucky for me I found it without replacing unneeded parts it was the guage cluster the contact where worn out pulled the entire clust out and re soldered but it had already shorted out so I just replaced the cluster and it has worked fine for me since

Speedometer/tach stopped working
There are 2 sensors on the engine that sent a signal to the computor and speedometer and tach. When one of these goes bad it can make the speedometer and tach go all over the place and also just stop working. This can also cause all types of engine running problems because the information being sent to the PCM will be incorrect all so. The units are easy to replace once you find them, it seems that they are located in different areas of the engine with each year the vehicle was put out.

2005 pontiac sunfire
I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?

Anyone ever have a problem with tach and speedometer
Had same problem, so I brought it to the dealership. They said there mechanic cleaned the contacts/leads on the console cluster, Speedo or tach have not failed since. It's been about 6 weeks so far!
