The letter is the engine configuration, the number is the number of
cylinders.
V is a V shaped engine.
W is basically two Vs put together
I is inline
F or H is a flat/horizontal (used by Porsche and Subaru).
There are currently no V4 engines in cars. The Inline configuration
greatly increases power over the V configuration, so for tiny engines
Inlines are used.
V8= 8 cylinders... lot of power..lousy gas mileage
V6= 6 cylinders..not as much power as a V8 but better gas mileage..
V4= 4 cylinders...not as much power as a V8 or V6..but gets ALOT better
mileage..
