New transmission 96 Saturn SL now HIGH RPM

My mechanic put a used transmission in my 96 Saturn SL and now the gear ratios are all wrong. It revs too fast - it runs rpm 3000 at 70 mph in 5th gear, it used to be 2300.

It seems like the mechanic put the wrong transmission in, is that possible? I took it back to him and he adjusted the transmission cable but it didn't change anything (though he claimed it made it shift easier).

The original problem was that it wouldn't shift into first except on a lucky try and the problem was starting to happen with second gear too.

SOURCE: NO 5TH GEAR IN MY 1995 MITS 3000,NO NOISE,NO PROBLEMS SHIFTING

I have the same problem. on the passenger side under the fender you will have access to the transmission. Remove the cap on the end. You will need to drain the transmission fluid and replace all the gears in the end cap if damaged hopefully they are not and you can just tighten up the nut. What happens is a nut comes loose and backs off the pressure on the bearings and you loose 5th. I removed the entire transmission and opened it up. There is nothing wrong with the other gears, because your problem is with the 5th gear synchronizer assembly. I let mine go too long and I'm having to replace everything. Make sure you put the appropriate torque on the nut and hit it with a hammer to lock it down. This should really be designed with a different method of keeping that nut in place. It's costing me lots of time and now money at the stealership. Good LUCK.

SOURCE: 1993 Saturn SL2 will not shift into highway gear

Saturn says and I quote

there transmission fluid is not to be changed after the first change at 6000 miles.

Now I say it should be changed at every 30000 miles. If changing out the fluid doesn't work then you need to go to a transmission repair shop.

SOURCE: 2001 Saturn SL Manual Transmission stuck in 2nd Gear

I had this same problem with my 1998 SL2 after about 170,000 miles. There is a plastic bushing at the end of the shifter cable that holds the cable to the shifter - it probably broke. Remove the center console inside the car to access the bottom of the shifter. I checked my local Saturn dealer to find the replacement cables (come as a set) are more than $200. So I went to Lowes and bought a beam clamp and a large washer to hold the cable to the shifter. It has been working fine for more than 28,000 miles and cost less than $3

Now i dont know a lot about automatics especially modern ones with all this fancy electronics thats used nowdays but i think its a fault with the temperature sensor for the gearbox. But where its located and what it looks like i have no idea it could even be mounted inside the gearbox .Sorry not a very good answer from a mechanic but?? very few of our europeon cars come with auto transmission .Evan when i do know whats wrong i cannot buy the parts for the gearbox as only re-con boxes supplied by the dealer so best advice is to try a specialist in auto box repairs only .PS some of my best students when i used to teach mechanics many moons ago were the girls so no excuses like iam only a girl please

What years are interchangeable for a manual 5speed transmission in a 1999 saturn sl1?

96-99 SL1, SC1, SW1. Avoid the 2 models, they are DOHC and have different gear ratios

99 saturn revs high rpm drop slow rough idle in gear with ac on almost a miss

Put the car in the darkest environment you can and with the engine at idle, look around the high voltage leads; plug wires, etc. I replaced my lousy leads after about 2 years.
If you have a multimeter, you may be able to isolate one or more bad leads by measuring their resistance. It should be ~7-10Kohms, mine were nearly open (infinite) on two.

I have a 96 saturn that i replaced the tranny in with a 95 tranny. when i drive it it will go through the gears. when it goes to shift into 3rd it downshifts. what is causing that to happen

You have to make sure that you are using the correct transmission. If you have a SOHC then you need the SOHC transmission. A DOHC transmission will bolt up but it has the wrong gear ratios for your SOHC and its computer. You will get all kinds of funky shifting if you use a SOHC car with a DOHC transmission or vise versa. Check the stamping on the bell housing of the transmission you put in and see if it has an MP7 or MP6. MP6 trannys are the SOHC transmission, the MP7 is the DOHC transmission.

Chaged transmission on 1997 saturn now it will not

It sounds like you have the wrong transmission. If your car is a DOHC aka an SL2, SC2, or SW2 then you have an MP7 transmission. If you have a SOHC, aka a SL1, SC1, or SW1 then you have an MP6. You need the right transmission for the right motor...DOHC needs the MP7 while the SOHC needs the MP6.

On top of that, you need the correct gear ratios which changed over the years. Your '97 CANNOT use a '98-'02 transmission. It must be 1991-1997 if it is an MP7 or 1993-1997 if it is an MP6.

Otherwise the PCM will not shift the wrong transmission.

My 2001 Saturn SL1 no longer goes in reverse, it only revs but does not catch. It is also starting to slip between first and second gear. About how much will a new transmission cost?

Sounds like this is an automatic s-series. Sounds like you previously had a reverse slam in the car. Meaning when you put it in reverse it would delay then slam. As this gets worse it begins to untorque what is known as the input shaft nut. Eventually this nut will get so loose that you lose reverse completely.

The transmission itself is fine and does not need replacement. $1,600-$2,200 is probably not even what the car is worth. The valve body needs to be changed out with a rebuilt one and the input shaft nut needs to be replaced and torqued down properly. Both of these are easily done by any backyard mechanic. Roughly 3 hours will have your transmission shifting like new.

I rebuild Saturn valve bodies (check my ad for more information) and provide instructions on how to do the repair. It costs much less than what any shop will tell you and they'll tell you the transmission is toast...IT IS NOT!

Any questions, just let me know.

I have a 2000 Saturn Sl, and I have no reverse. It seems to go forward fine, just no reverse......

I'm not a car Expert but I think you need this looked at by a mechanic,  our family car lost the primary drive gear,  When we took it to a mechanic we found that it needed a new transmission, We paid $3000+/- for a new transmission.  I hope you can resolve this,
