I have a 1986 Mustang 5.0 5 speed, the problem is that the car acts like its not getting enough fuel. At first start it will run then shut off after maybe 10 seconds, then after a few starts it stays on. When trying to drive and giving it gas it acts like it wants to stall and starving for fuel. I changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump kicks in before starting...im thinking the fuel pressure regulator may be bad...i did check the fuel line valve and the pressure is low...
Measure fuel pressure on injector rail - should be 38 to 40 psi. If low or fluctuating, then replace regulator. Another possibility is the in-tank filter being clogged - rare I know, but trash in the gas tank and it's clogged.
Testimonial: "Your help was really appreciated and i did pull the fuel pump and come to find out it was the fuel pump itself lol thanks for your help"
Thanks for your help...i did drop the tank and tested the fuel pump and still the same problem...now i noticed this even though i didnt mention it before but when i try to accelerate the car makes a ticking sound as it stalls...well i better check the fuel pressure next but that ticking sound i wonder what that is ! Bout ready to just drop in a new engine and new everything else...lol

Engine stalls cold or RPM
fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.
This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.
