The torque converter is not all the way in the transmission. Pull the transmission back out(unfortunately) and you will need to shake and wiggle while lightly pushing the torque converter into the transmission. Once it goes over the splines for the pump, you will know and the space between it and the transmission housing will be minimal.

Testimonial: "Thank you for responding. I ended that conversation because I was already in the middle of another. I did make sure the torque converter was all the way in. I could have come out while i was installing the tranny."

Where is the turbine/input shaft speed sensor located on a 98' Ford explorer sport 6cyl shod 2wd?

Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor
The turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor is a magnetic pickup that sends the powertrain control module (PCM) torque converter turbine speed information.
The TSS sensor is mounted internally on the center support.
The PCM uses TSS information to help determine electronic pressure control (EPC) and torque converter clutch (TCC) operation.
You have to remove and disassemble the transmission down to the center support to access.

Can't turn the flywheel on my '99 explorer sport with E code motor. trying to install last four bolts on torque converter to complete installation of transmission.

remove the splash pan from under front of engine put socket on the bolt holding the harmonic balance on u should be able to turn engine from here if not there may be other problem if the gearbox has been bolted up and the converter has not been fitted all the way into the transmission this will cause lock up loosen all bolts around bellhousing to take the weight off the try to turn the engine if its free then u will have to move the transmission back far enough to rotate the converter while pushing in it should locate and push in

The flywheel bolt wont line up to where i can get the torque conveter bolts in

Make sure the torque converter is in all the way. It should spin freely and be about 1/2 - 1/4 inch away. You can either put a big socket on the bolt in the front of the harmonic balancer and turn the engine to where you can easily access the flywheel holes. Then while spinning the torque converter push in into the transmission. You may have to try to get a pry bar up in near the center of the torque converter to push it straight in (while spinning it). If not, you will either have to separate it again (take out the two side lower bolts first and insert some LONG ones of the same thread to give you room and keep it lined up) and remove the other 4 bolts completely. If you're sure it's in all the way. Either the torque converter or flywheel may be wrong. If you have a 4L60E and someone gave you a '98 or '00 there could be a problem as the '99 is supposed to be '99 only. Some people say otherwise. However it's been my experience that the '99 Astro/Safari/s10/s15 4 WD and AWD will work fine but other years sometimes have the peanut (small) converter. Or someone may have assumed that the 4L60E was the same from a full sized GM 4x4 product. I hope that helps. If so please leave a testimonial and rate my assistance. Thanks for using Fixya.

stop by local parts store (Autozone,Advance, etc) and have them do a free fault code test. They can print out a list of faults and clear the codes

Does the 3.0l transmission fit on the 4.0l engine

Hiya,

There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:
  • 1991–94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
  • 1995–99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
  • 1996–99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
  • 1997–99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
So, what you need to do now is...establish from a FORD workshop, whether both the A4LD and 4R55E transmissions share the same components and mounting dimensions.

Cheers,

Scott
