If the steering wheel lock is engaged with the wheel turned sharply in either direction - weight of the vehicle at rest on the wheels can cause the steering column and ignition key lock to bind. To get the ignition to turn and unlock, you may have to grasp and turn the wheel or wiggle it a little back and forth to get it to come off the steering lock. This will relieve the pressure and allow you to turn the ignition lock if done right.

Why my key wont turn in my barina spark

Hi Kerry I assume we are talking when key is in ignition it won't turn. Now this could be something simple or an issue that a dealer will need to fix. simple fix:- Is the car in a neutral gear position if auto is it in park position. If manual do you have one foot on brake pedal and clutch down when turning key? (some cars are fitted with a safe start can't remember if this is one of them). The other fix would be to wiggle steering wheel up and down whilst turning key, sometimes the spring tension in the steering gear will create a force against the ignition lock and by moving the steering wheel it helps to remove that force. If you try all the above and it is still the same check your hand book under ignition or fault finding just in case there are any ideas. If again there are no clues to what has happened the fault is going to be more involved either electrical issue or mechanical and you will have to contact a dealer. Good luck

Key wont turn in ignition

Often this is caused by steering wheel interlock. Try turning wheel a little back and forth while trying to turn key to see if key now turns. Some cars require stepping ******* brake pedal and if the switch at the pedal has failed or become dislodged this can happen.

Ignition switch will not engage/turn to start car

Hi Beth usually when shifter is stuck there is a locking mechanism and keeps shifter from engaging unless brake is depressed to release the lock. If you hear a clicking sound when pedal is depressed then switch is probably ok and its probably the steering wheel lock. First try with your spare key to start the vehicle(old key may be worn ). If that doesn't do it then try with WD 40 a very little in ignition key hole or on the key work it slowly and see what happens. If none of these suggestions work its probably the steering wheel lock and that requires surgery. Keep me post best of luck

Why won't my ignition key turn over and my steering wheel is locked in place at the sametime?

I'm assuming you mean your key wont turn in the ignition. first off check to make sure the car is in park. then what you gotta do is put in the key and put a little pressure as if turning but dont turn too hard, then even though the steering wheel is locked you will have to try to move it a little, if you parked with your tires turned then you will want to try to turn the wheel in the same direction, (even locked you should be able to move it about a half inch) you will have to turn the wheel hard but it should move enough to allow the key to turn, you may have to jiggle the key a little in the ignition but it should eventually turn, just remember not to try turning the key too hard, the extra force wont make it go but can cause the key to break. this tends to happen when you turn the car off andthe steering wheel gets locked if the wheels are turned hard in either direction. also if multiple attempts at this still dont work, try taking the key out and turning it over and trying again. Even though both sides of the key are identicle, because of wear on the key and the ignition, sometimes when the wheel locks the ignition, it will only turn if the key is put in a certain way. Hope this helps, good luck

Steering wheel getting locked up

I think it is a common problem that while the power steering relaxes and the tyres find a comfortable spot to sit on the road, after you've parked, the steering mechanism can push against the steering lock in the ignition switch. Usually the steering wheel needs a bit of a jiggle while you turn the key. If you were to engage park brake, release foot brake and let go of steering wheel before turning off ignition, it may settle better for you.

Saturn vue ignition key won't turn

It was very likely that the problem turning the key was due to the steering column lock mechanism. Sometimes when you lock the steering wheel, if you the mechanism will bind up, making it difficult to unlock the ignition with the key. Often when this happens, you will be parked on a hill with your wheels agains a curb or some such item. Once you turn the wheel hard to the right (or left), the pressure is released on the locking mechanism, and the key will turn easily. This is a similar situation to what can happen in an automatic if you park on a hill without the parking brake.
try doing this:
pop the off the circle piece around the ignition and the holster cover under the steering wheel.
that ought to work.
