If it's an OBD1 car (typically before 1996) you can manually access the codes and find out what they are by watching the "check engine" light blink. If it's an OBD2 car, then no...you have to have a code reader.

The good news is that many auto parts stores will read the codes for you for free (autozone). Just be careful listening to their diagnosis.

Good luck.

I find this procedure, test it for retrieving trouble
    codes...

    RETRIEVING CODES
    1 . Before
retrieving codes, verify CHECK ENGINE light comes on with ignition on
and engine off. The CHECK ENGINE light should go off when engine is
started. If light remains on, system has detected a malfunction or
    abnormality.
2 . Ensure battery voltage is greater than
11 volts and charging system is okay. Engine should be at normal
    operating temperature.
3 . Apply parking brake. Shift transaxle
to Neutral (M/T) or Park (A/T). Turn A/C and all accessories off. Close
    throttle valve.
4 . Turn ignition on with engine off. Install
jumper wire between terminals TE1 (or T) and E1 in engine check
connector. (Location of DLC might differ from diagram as it is only for
    illustration purposes).

5 . Count number of flashes from CHECK ENGINE light. If system is
operating properly (with no codes), CHECK ENGINE light will flash
    continuously and evenly.

NOTE: If CHECK ENGINE light will not flash diagnostic codes, see
    appropriate DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK.

6 . If code exists, digits
of each code will flash at 1/2 - second intervals, with a 1 1/2 - second
pause between first and second digits.
7 . If more than one code
is stored, a 2 1/2 - second pause will occur before next code is
flashed. Once all codes are displayed, a 4 1/2 - second pause will occur
    then code(s) will be repeated.
    8 . Codes are displayed
from the smallest to largest code. After codes are retrieved, remove
jumper wire to exit diagnostic mode.

    Ignition coils and ignitors
do fail now and then resulting in no sparks. Perform a spark test to
confirm if sparks are available and bright blue and not dull orange.

I have a 91 Toyota pickup 4x4 and the engine died while driving at normal speed

As with any no start condition, you will need to figure out if you are dealing with a fuel problem or spark problem. If the engine is cranking normally we will assume the timing belt is ok.
You can check for spark at the plugs, and try spraying carb cleaner into the intake hose.
Also check the computer for trouble codes and the fuel pressure at the injectors.

91 toyota 22re pickup stalls on idle

May have a plugged catalitic conveter or muffler. So do you know which plug is #1? the very front one also make sure that you start with the number one plug slot it shold be marked with 1 then go around it, you may have damaged the plug wires when pulling them off. And Buy OEM for your toyota there are plugs that just won't run in the toyota engines also set the gap on the plugs they are never right from the store.

Trouble code 34

Is that code from the engine light blinking? My book only has 4-digit numbers in it. If you need a code reader to plug in, most major auto stores will do it for free. Auto Zone and Advanced Auto for sure.

91 Toyota 22re sputters around 2500rpms

your throttle position sensor might me bad or out of adjustment. if it is out of adjustment then it can misfire all the way up to 3500 rpm.
i had a friend that had a miss fire at 2500 rpm. i adjusted the tpss right and the misfire went away. Check for engine codes by jumping TE1 and E1.
Your fuel filter may be dirty and restricting fuel to your injectors.
have your fuel pressure checked.
