SOURCE: four wheel drive not engaging
You can check the vacuum lines and diaphram that are located underneath the battery shelf. Comes out really easy. Check that the lines are not broken. There is a vacuum line that runs to a solenoid in the center of the fire wall, make sure they are not broken there, and there is an actuator cable that runs to the transfer case. Sometimes it is as easy as replacing the vacuum hose, the actuator cable, or the diaphram under the battery shelf went bad. If you ever had a battery leak acid because it went bad.....that acid goes under the shelf and eats those lines. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Vibration and noise from front end while driving
Jack up the front end and put stands under it and block rear wheels. Look at axle boots and see if they are cracked. Try turning wheel back and forth sharply and see if you can hear any clicking. Problem could be outer axle joints. If the boots are cracked or you hear a clicking noise you will have to replace the axle. The axle and boot come as a complete unit. Please let me know what you find out.

jack it up and see if the wheels wobble when you try to move them if they do make sure the play is not in the ball joint it's most likley the bearing

Sounds like the chain in the transfer case has broke or the linkage is out of adjustment
