My 97 tj begins to squeak when i shift it into 4wd...the 4wd works fine but there is a alot of noise. it's a metallic squeaking (not a grinding), like a door hinge or wagon wheel that needs lube. It only does this in 4wd, and while moving. last time i went offroading, about a month ago, i went through some cold, deep water (almost covered the tires) is this a simple lubrication problem or something bigger?
It could be water has gotten to something it shouldn't have, I would check the front u-joints to your front axles. There may be grease fittings on them but most of the time they are sealed or should be at least, u-joints can make a squeaky sound if there is no grease.
