I have a 1992 ford probe 2.2 that wont stay running

That could be normal from the catalytic convertor but if the engine is running very rough or won't stay runnig the head is cracked or the head gasket is blown check the motor oil to see if it now looks like mustard if so that's your problem

it indicates a blown head gasket and the compression pressure is getting to the cooling system
have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracked head

Look at the bypass resistor and the ignition switch. Both can cause the problem Also look at the pressure regulator for the fuel rail. Take the small wire off the starter solenoid so you can hear the fuel pump without cranking the engine. If the pump runs fast at first then slows down ..it's ok If it runs fast all the time check the pressure regulator.

You blew a head gasket. Remove the head and see if you can see where the gasket failed, have the head shaved and replace gaskets.

How low does the pressure get? It only takes 4 psi to keep an engine lubricated. The pressure will drop off as the engine get to operating temperature. This is normal. As long as the pressure climbs instantly when you accelerate you're ok.

The next thing to check is compression.

Have a compression test done. It's quick and inexpensive. If it fails, your probably looking at a blown head gasket.

Most modern cars with fuel injection, have to maintain a certain range of fuel pressure. There is a schrader valve in the fuel line. At this point fuel pressure can be checked. Pressure is always present. This can be dangerous, even at low pressure. Hope this helps lbreen

This is a common issue in ford escorts, and I hate to say it but your cylinder head is bad.
I've personally seen this issue on over 20 ford escorts ranging from 1991 to the present.
The cylinder heads are made of cast-aluminum and are only so durable. If you like to drive your car hard, or race it around, your cylinder head will eventually break apart at the valve seats, you will lose compression, and drop metal shavings on to your pistons.
The easiest way to determine if this has happened, is to do a compression test on the cylinders. On the 2.0L SPI engines, your compression should not be below 100psi (and 100psi being absolute minimum) on any cylinder.

In most cases you will not be able to rebuild your cylinder head. I do recommend replacing any piston that has had metal shavings drop on it, although I have seen (what I consider idiots) people grind the metal shavings off the pistons and reinstall them. The more you drive the vehicle with this issue, the worse your problem will be in the end.
