I own a 1992 chevy k2500 5.7 350 pick up. In order to get it running right to pass CA. smog and to avoid break downs I've replaced Fuel sending unit, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, O2 sensor, MAP sensor, TBI air filter housing gaskets, top and bottom, Exhaust ( muffler and tailpipe), catalytic converter, oil, oil filter, power steering pump, pressure line to power steering pump, radiator and air filter. However, recently I've been having trouble with rough starts. It only does it for the first 5 seconds, but it's every time, no matter if it's been running prior a while or not. If I turned it off then try to start it back up, it still does it. After it goes through its rough start the ''service engine soon'' light comes on. It stays on for about a mile of driving then it turns off. Help, any suggestions. This is my only means of transportation and I don't have much money to work with at this moment.

look into the header area, you have a hole or leak frot he header to the catalytic.
When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon or small picture of an engine) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.
