the oil pressure sensor tells the ECM when there is insufficient oil pressure to safely run the engine
when you start an engine there is oil covering the pump inlet and the pressure buils up
if there is insufficient oil to maintain pressure ,or the pump cannot maintain a low preset pressure , the ecm will shut the engine down to protect it
like wise if the wiring is loose /faulty the signal from the sensor is interrupted and that tells the ecm to shut the engine down
again if the sensor is faulty , the ecm will shut the engine down
how to fix :-
install a mechanical oil gauge in the system and check for oil pressure achieved
replace the sensor switch with a known good one
run the fault codes
Could be any of several things. If the crank sensor is marginal and not sending pulses, the fuel pump is shut off. This is for safety. The pump is energized for a few seconds as key is turned in preparation for starting then engine must rotate normally to keep the pump on. If it stops, in a few seconds the fuel is cut off.
The Diesel engine doesn't have an ignition system. Also the dash light shouldn't cause it not to start? You said you changed the fuel filter right? After you started cranking it again did the lift pump fill the new filter up. I have had these before where the lift pumps go bad causing low lift pump pressure which causes the water in fuel light to be on. Did it die going down the road or did you shut it off and can't get it restarted.
First off, add a new ground wire from the engine to the body just for
the hell of it. Now clean all the battery cable connetors aat all point
and add WD40 afterwards. Also check connectors from dash panel to
engine circuits. This is real suspect. WD 40 them also
Hello I'm not saying this is going to solve your problem but:::I have had about 10 fuel pumps over 20 years of being in the trade work like that and work for a day and die! be sure it is not manufacture defective!!!! manually test it! good luck! hope this helps!
These engines have a sensor known as the Crankshaft position sensor, they are most of the time the part that causes these problems, it is located on the front of the engine, it gets it's signal from the crank pulley/harmonic balancer, if it goes open when hot the engine dies, when the sensor cools back down the eng will restart.
