Replacing An Ignition Switch..

If The Ignition Switch Is Defective, It Must Be Replaced Regardless. Before Removing A Dashboard-mounted Switch, The Tumbler (Lock Mechanism) Must Be Removed From The Switch.Normally A Small Piece Of Wire Is Inserted Into A Hole IN The Front Of The Switch And The Key Is Turned. This Will Release The Tumbler From The Switch So The Tumbler Can Be Pulled Free. Then Unplug The Wires And Remove The Old Switch.

A Steering Column-mounted Ignition Switch Is Separated From The Tumbler. It Is Normally About Halfway Down And On Top Of The Steering Column. To Remove This Type Of Switch, Remove The Fasteners Holding The Steering Column To The Dash. This Will Let The Column Drop Down So You Can Replace The Ignition Switch.

My 1997 Sierra pickup. We replaced the ignition switch. The plastic pin that goes into the switch broke off.

Hi. Would you please write back and word your request differently and supply a photo of the broken plastic piece? I'm not sure what went wrong but the key cylinder should have slid into the lock housing the same exact way it came out. You should have carefully removed the lower and upper trim cover (behind the steering wheel). The battery would be disconnected before you turned the ignition key to the start position and then with a small punch or pick, depress the security lock "Release" button. Now the key cylinder would release and slide out and you would align the new cylinder and slide it back into place exactly how the old one was orientated. Please write back and be as detailed as you can. Tell me what happened. At this time I can only guess that the lock cylinder is not all the way in place. I hope this helps. If not I hope to hear from you soon. Good Luck.

Ignition lock cylinder

The steering column is covered by two plastic trim pieces, on the bottom one remove the screws and the covers will come off, then the switch can be easily re[laced. Alwa7ys diarm the airbag system before doing any work, it can seriously injure you if it goes off accidently.

I need to replace the ignition switch in my car

There is an Ignition switch that is located under the dash. On the other hand if your referring to where the ignition key goes in then this part is called an ignition cylinder. If it is the ignition cylinder (or tumbler) then yes the steering wheel must be removed to replace this and you will need special tools to do it. I would not suggest doing this yourself with no experience as there are lots of small pieces and parts in there. The ingition switch is located under the dash on the steering column and has a wire harness attached to it with numerouse wires. This is replaced by removing 2 small bolts and unplugging it. There is a rod running down the column that goes into a slot on the back side of the ignition switch. It must be placed in the hole where the old old was and then the switch may need adjusting forward or back to properly work.
Hope this helps.
