start by getting the transmission fluid and filter changed/check for debris but ussually this is the first sign you'll need a transmission rebuilt/replaced. But keep in mind I havent seen the vehicle
Your transmission is on it's last leg. You might try some transmission additive. If it works, it may take a day or two of driving, You may get another year or so out of the transmission. I used TRANX and got 3 years out of my dodge work truck before I rebuilt it.
Assuming you have an auto transmission, your only choice is to ease off the gas when you want it to change gears. Then apply slight pressure on the gas to continue to accelerate.
Without getting into transmission diagnostics that would require special tools, you can check the transmission fluid level. You could also drain and replace the trans fluid to see if this solves the problem. Changing the fluid is considered regular maintence, and will not hurt a thing. The trans will benifit from fresh fluids in the long run also.
You need to replace your TCU located on the passenger side behind the kick panel in the passenage area of the car. It is a square shaped box that controls the transmission and the "S" light on the dash.
