What is involved with replacing the driveshaft carrier bearing on a 2003 Saturn Vue?. Any guesstimate on part cost?
About $200 in parts,,,you can not do this at home,,,,,you need special tools to press yoke on and off and even then sometimes they bend,,,not a easy job,,,,,,i am a master tech and worked at saturn for 8 years and i hated doing these
I am also in need of replacing the carrier bearing in my 2003 Saturn Vue V6 AWD.. You mentioned that it can not be done at home, if I were to purchase the part online, can most shops be able to replace it or does it need to be done at a dealership? I am doing all I can to fix the NEVER ENDING problems I've had with my Vue and get rid of it while I can, so this isn't the only thing I will be shelling out money for all at the same time..

Various year Saturn Vue / Pontiac Torrent / Chevy Equinox models use the
same carrier bearing - just slight differences in the other components.
Having done ALOT of these - I suggest taking to someone with good tools
or a local Driveline repair shop..Why? = well depending on the age and
amount of rust - the center end yoke may require HEAT and a good press
to remove without damaging and distorting..Also there is a "hog ring /
Snap Ring" clip that retains this End Yoke - and it can be hard to
remove..
If you decide to do yourself - here are some basic steps/hints..
1.
BE carefull when removing the driveshaft from the vehicle.. - The front
hi-speed CV in the transmission can get stuck and when you pull it out
wrong - the cv will fall apart and the internal components are NOT easy
to re-assemble correctly!
2. once the shaft is out of the car - MARK
all components on the driveshaft that you may remove..This will allow
you to retain the driveshaft balance the best you can..Now remove the
center uj snap rings and get the uj out (this again is difficult..The
normal way of pounding/pressing out a universal can be a challenge with a
uj this small.. I have my secrets..:)
3. you need to clamp the shaft with the carrier bearing in a vice - snuggly.
4.
IF you get the Carrier bearing kit that includes all parts needed = you
need to drive the end yoke towards the driveshaft to relieve pressure
between the "hog ring" and the end yoke.Use screwdrivers/pliers -
whatever to get that ring out of there..
4a. If you dont get the
whole kit -then you need to RE-USE this hog ring. To do this you need to
drive the "hog ring" into the groove, work it around...if it wont stay
down - drive the end yoke towards it to put a little prese on
it...Eventually you can drive the end yoke off...HOWEVER - most are so
rusty that you will need a press and ALOT of heat to remove it
properly..
...I will stop here..CB kit# with uj and replacement retaing snap ring is 25775162 or 12569884 for 1 uj..
