Try your TPS throttle position sensor. They tend to idle up and down for a while before they quit altogether. Good Luck

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2010

I am by no means a Ford Tech. But, I have owned them and worked on them. Your particular problem is why I no longer own them. Constant chasing of sensors. Ugh. If the truck was in an accident of significant force then there is a fuel cut off switch that is activated. In the event of a rollover or impact the switch is thrown and the fuel stays in the tank. Contact a Ford dealership. They should be able to tell you if your truck has this switch and where it can be located. They should be able to tell you anything else you might need to know about any other sensors. Also, they should be able to print out any diagrams you need and give them to you over the counter. Good Luck.

Look for a vacum leck, simple carb spary or WD-40 spray it around the intake NOT the air box and see if the rpm's go up. If so the start listen for the sucking sound use the spary to help pin point and fix.
Good luck

Fuel pressure and the fuel pump is only one reason that this can happen. It could also be related to your ignition system or your emission control system.
You should check for any diagnostic trouble codes. With this codes will can have more clues.

Good luck.

To much carbon around the throttle plate at idle setting.
use some carb cleaner spray around the plate.
remove the air intake tube to the throttle body.
and clean the black carbon around the throttle plate,

or

ignition switch is bad.

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2010

    did you spray it out?

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2010

broken abs sensor will not prevent or change the running conditions of the engine system or transmission systems at all in anyway.

it will only prevent the braking system from prefenting braking to that wheel if it locksup in the rain or ice.

if the abs system is not complete in ant way the abs system goes in to default mode.

and the abs light will be on.

so on the matter of the engine not staying running.

can you keep it running by feathering the gas pedal?

Check the codes from the computer if possible. Auto Zone will do this free of charge in any US state but California. It sounds to me the throttle posioning sensor is at fault

Hi! Please check or replace the fuel filter. It may be clogged with dirt and rust from the fuel tank thats why the fuel flow is interupted which can cause a bad run. Hope this helps.

93 Ford ranger 4x4 sport. Rough idle and dieing sometimes. RPMs will drop when this happens and engine will die then just pick back up. Check engine light comes on then. I have replaced catalytic...

It could be the mass air flow or manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) ; usually has just one or the other. The idle air control valve can also cause this. Sometimes the O2 (oxygen) sensors can cause this as well. If it runs fine going down the road then I would check the Idle Air Control Valve first.

My 1997 Ford Taurus stalls when I accelerate. It only happens about 5 to 10 minutes into my drive. It starts up fine. If I am driving and the car stalls on acceleration, I can turn the car off and back...

Replace first, the fuel filter if this has not already been done. You may have a plugged filter, and these are very inexpensive. If this does not resolve the issue, locate the MAS (mass airflow sensor) located between the throttle body and the air filter housing. Start the car and let it idle normally; with a screwdriver handle or other such small tool, tap the mass airflow sensor (small black unit; will have a wiring harness hooked to the side of it); if the car dies, stalls, hesitates; first purchase MAS cleaner at the local auto parts dealer - specifically ask for Mass Airlflow Sensor Cleaner. It will should cost between 7-12 bucks - but you wont need the whole can - however, when using it: (if the car does not die, stall or hesitate and the idle stays the same, than the sensor is not bad) If it does however:
1. Remove the MAS (disconnect wiring harness) you may need to pull the top end of the air filter housing off.
2. Spray inside the sensor generously from both ends ensuring it's entirety is sprayed. Let stand for 15 minutes to airdry.
3. Re-install the sensor and start car. If there is still no improvement and the car hesistates, 1. Ensure the air filter as well is in good repair, and that there is nothing causing any air flow restriction between the airfilter and the throttle body.
4. If the airfilter is good, and there are no restrictions to air flow, consider replacing the MAS, however if you can get the car to the auto parts dealer, or to a technician (who may charge; auto parts dealers usually don't) have them run a diagnostics test on the car.
5. At this point, if cleaning the sensor has made no improvement, and the car stays idling, does not hesitate when tapping the sensor, the air filter is good, the fuel filter is good - then the next step is to replace the fuel pump.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

1987 Ford Ranger, 4cyl, 2.3L Runs like a charm when cold. Warms up, starts to buckle, oscilates even stalls at a trafic light. Help!

the idle/air control valve is either dirty or faulty. remove the valve and spray some brake cleaner in it, use the whole can to make sure you really get it clean. also try getting some mass airflow sensor cleaner, could be part of the problem. the control valve is located next to the air filter box. small metal cylinder with a couplevacuum lines attached. shouldnt be too hard to find. let me know if that fixes it.

My 2000 Ford Ranger keeps showing codes PO 171 and

These codes mean that the oxygen sensor is reading too "Lean" on both the left and right cylinder banks and the engine control system can't compensate any further to solve the problem. You may have a dirty or failing Mass Airflow Sensor that is miscalcuating the amount of airflow the engine is taking in which in turn can cause both of these codes to set. If the sensor is reporting less air than the engine is actually taking in then the engine computer will add only the amount of fuel it should based on what it was told by the sensor which will cause both cylinder banks to run "lean". There could be something else going on such as having two bad oxygen sensors [very rare] but I do see these two codes together quite often and usually its the sensor that is causing it. Hope this helps a bit!
