1996 toyota tercel air conditioner will not engage. The light on the button comes on but back in Sept it no longer worked all of a sudden. Could it just need a coolant recharge??? I read it won't engage when the coolant is low.
Thanks
Shawn
Hello, and welcome to FixYa. Let us try to help.
Yes, you read correctly; if the refrigerant charge is low,or the refrigerant has leaked out, the AC compressor will not activate. Pressure switches built into the system inturupt the power to the AC clutch if there is insufficient system pressure.
I would suggest taking the vehicle to a qualified garage, and have the service tech there hook his set of 'AC Gauges" to the car. After he does that, he can tell you if you need a partial charge, of if you system is empty. I would def recommend the car be checked with the AC gauges; as adding refrigerant to the system without knowing how much is currently in it can damage the compressor.
