Per my VIN, the serial number of my 1971 TBird is 129175. There was only 9,146 produced of that model. How can I tell which one of the 9,146 is mine and secondly, how can I tell where and when it was manufactured?
OK, Ready?,,,, 1S53F100001
The 1 is the year, 71, a more detailed date code is stamped into the door panel, A letter in front of the year is the month, A = jan, etc, if it goes past M, then it is second year.
S,,assembly plant(Deerborn,)etc.
53 is the body style, 2 door, 4 door,etc
F is the engine code, 390, etc
the last six digits indicate the consecutive unit number, all cars made on the same assembly line were in the sequence, don't forget, the next number in the line could have been a maverick.
The rest of the VC label, notes all the other info, color code, trim, axel, and where it was shipped. The starting serial numbers were 100,001, with the T-bird, Mustang, Torino, and Maverick on the same line. I have a 1971 Ford shop manual here, volume 3, electrical, if you are interested, It is for sale. Hope this helps.
Testimonial: "Excellent feedback from someone who obviously knows what he's talking about. Appreciate the information."
The date of manufacture should be on the drivers side door jam. it will only give you a month and year
