Question about 2004 Saturn ION

I have a 2007 Saturn Ion with a power steering issue. The car only has 31,000 miles, but fell short by 14 days of the warranty. We contacted the dealer, they ran the vin # and said the vehicle was sold on a certain date.(We bought it used from another dealer) I have seen several other complaints on this, shouldn't there be a recall on this problem. I hear the part runs around $600 and labor around $400-$500. Anyone see a way around this expensive and well know problem?

You can now buy just the power steering motor for $150 instead of the complete column for $600,,the motor overheats and cuts out,thats all you need,easy to install or about $150 ish laborat dealer,that will fix the cutting out and no power steering issue,,,,common,,,,,checvy has a recall on the cobalt for this concern but saturn does not even thou its the same exact part,,,,because when GM went bankrupt they are NO longer responsibile for any saturn issue,,,,,,hence,,no recall

Bad ignition switch, replace with new under warranty. Take it back to who ever did it if you had a shop do the work. Something is shorting in the switch.

2007 SATURN ION POWER STEERING MESSAGE. MESSAGE FALSHES AND STEERING IS TOUGH TO TURN. i TURN CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT'S FINE UNTIL MESSAGE COMES ON AGAIN. IT MAKES NO NOISE.
  • You have an electronic power steering system.

  • Your power steering module, steering assist motor and the steering sensor could all be problems. You will have to have a scan performed to see what the exact problem is. There is no other way.

  • The power steering aides you in turning the wheel. When the light comes on there is a malfunction and this is why it is hard to turn the wheel, because the steering assistance of the power steering is gone at that time. Turning the car off just temporarily resets the PCM.

Power steering goes out on saturn ion quite often. can reset by turning off and on again. worried it may totally go one day
This is actually a problem that Saturn is aware of. Instead of issuing a recall, however, they put a 10 year 100,000 mile addendum on the warranty for the power steering column. If your car is still under the 100K mark, make an appt. and get it fixed asap, because you're SOL once it goes over that mileage. I, btw, had mine replaced two weeks ago for free. Over 100K, it's a 1200 dollar repair.
Pretty sleezey way for Saturn to handle the problem if you ask me...

2005 ion power steering problem
remove electronic power steering (EPS) motor. remove the 4 bolts that hold on the motor housing. remove the housing. using a tooth brush, clean out the 'brush' dust from between the commutators. don't use cleaner spray as you might degrease the bearings. don't use anything metal to clean out the dust you might scratch or nick the commutators.

this solution has worked for over 500 miles for me. I'll keep you posted.

I have a 2007 saturn ion.....I have no power steering, like alot of other post i have seen. I called saturn of bowling green, and of course warranty out @ 36,000 miles. Just my luck i have 42,000 miles on...
My Saturn has electronic power steering. Mine wasn't working at all because the fuses were blown. Check and see if yours has any blown fuses. (Mine were in the engine compartment. Two 30 or 40 amp)

There is no fluid in that system. You may have a relay going bad or something. With these electrical issues, I would go see the dealership since not many shops will know what to do with this system.

Power Steering
Has anyone gave Saturn any hard time over this power steering issue yet? Looks to me like this is a very WELL KNOWN problem for Saturn's but nothing's been done to solve it. Even newer Saturns have this problem, especially just when the car's out of the lousy warranty that we have. Someone's got to take action, may be a sour law suit would do the job.

2007 ION starts but dies when put in revers or drive. 44000 miles
