The starter is mounted on the driver's side bottom of the engine.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it safely with jackstands.

Starter mounting-1986-89 RX-7

  1. Disconnect the heavy battery cable from the terminal marked B on the starter solenoid (or magnetic switch on later models).
  2. Disconnect the thinner ignition switch wire from the terminal marked S on the solenoid/magnetic switch.
  3. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, remove the front starter motor bracket bolts and the bracket. Remove the two starter attaching bolts and remove the starter.
To install:
  1. Support the starter by and hand and position it onto the flywheel housing. Install the two mounting bolts. On 1986-89 RX-7s, torque the bolts to 24-33 ft. lbs. (33-45 Nm). Install the front starter bracket, if removed.
  2. Connect the starter wiring to the appropriate solenoid or switch terminals. On 1986-89 models, torque the B terminal (battery cable) nut to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

The size for the bolts that hold the starter in are 14mm. The one wire that you have to take off of the stater solenoid is a 12mm

SOURCE: When I try starting my 1987 Mazda rx7 it clicks

Check the battery, have a load test done on the battery, and check the connections at the battery and the battery post, make sure they are shiny clean, then of course check the alternator,to make sure it is charging enough,13.65 volts to 14.25 volts, any less replace the alternator,If all this checks out good, replace the starter.

My 87 rx7 got a new battery for it and when i put the new one in now there is no power to the ignition could this be a fuse or a starter problem?

It would be a fuse or wiring issue not starter if there is no power to the ignition switch.
Ignition switches were not high failure items. The 86/91 RX7 had electrical issues. Check fuses, grounds, battery cable ends(for corrosion in wire at connecter, swollen looking wire) look up all the TSB's for the car. If you like working on the car yourself, get alldatadiy well worth it. And go to foxed.ca to download the FSM. (mazda factory shop manual)
