Start by rebooting the as explained regkyl.
If issue returns then get a new gascap and reboot again. The seal on your cap is maybe worn out.
If issue still return then you'll have no choice to go and have the sensor checked and hope the problem is not with the cluster...
Presumably you checked to be sure the gas cap is indeed on? if so, then you either have a faulty gas cap or a faulty sensor to the gas cap. Try replacing the gas cap first (you need a factory one for the sensor to work properly)
I know this is an old post... but I had this issue now. I wanted to put my experience out there. I have this car and sure enough, the gas cap light went off. I checked the cap and it was on perfect.. Then sure enough a couple days later my check engine light popped up. They ran my car in the system for the engine light and sure enough there were two evap codes that went off.. They thought it was just the gas cap but then looked into Chrysler known issues and they told me there was a service order for this model car where they need to replace two parts.. one is some kind of filter and something else (didnt pay attention to the name).. but I go back tomorrow to get it fixed. They set an hour appointment as its supposed to be an easy fix. Im hoping it improves gas efficiency some at least, too.
the check engine light is most likely evap system large leak which is what causes the gas cap light it probably needs a nvld pump or it has a leaking evap tube under th vehicle.
need a diagnosis tool, reset codes from it--autozone can do this for free. sometimes the code will go away after X miles of driving. This is a OBDIII issue, again a Tech II or scan tool can erase the code.
You may have a faulty gas cap. If you are tightening the cap down securely the light will go off after the car is driven about 40 miles. I suggest installing a new gas cap which should cost about $15 at your local auto parts store. *** Please rate me on this answer.***
You will need to get the code befoe anyone can begin to diagnose this, There are about 5 parts that can cause this problems. The gas cap is one of them. If anyone has been uner the hood just pryor to this happening its possible they left a vacuum hose off or maybe broke one.
If this car is really an 07 then this being an emission issue you are covered under warrenty. Take it to the dealer.
I had this similar problem but gascap and engine light on. I changed out the gas cap cleared codes and both were back o. Went to the dealer he insisted it was the after market gascap changed in and cleared the codes. Before I even left the lot they were both back on. Finally they found the problem they had to change out some kind of pump and canister and it fixed the problem.
