If the linkage at the transmission is not tangled with the other set of linkage then the problem is deeper in the transmission, and the syncronizer is at fault...do a thorough inspection of the linkages before ripping out the tranny..
Was it parked on a hill, or an incline? There's probably not a simple solution. However, you can try jacking the rear end of the vehicle off the ground to get some of the tension off the drive train. Have someone spin the back wheel forward while trying to shift it into neutral. Or have someone move the rear wheel back and forth like a big steering wheel. If it works. Have it looked at as soon as possible.
There are two different transmissions on the 89, assuming you have a 6 cyl. The Peugeot seems to be the easiest to find. (it has a seam that runs down the middle, front to back.) Just in case you have to start looking for one. Either will work except if you have the Asian trans and convert to the Peugeot, you'll have to get the shifter with it.
