Check engine light came on and stayed on. There is no other lights on to indicate trouble.

Not unusual. The CEL is there to tell you that the onboard computer has detected an anomaly (or more), and has stored a code in its memory to assist in determining the failure. You need an OBD-II code reader to retrieve the codes from the computer and take whatever corrective action is recommended based upon the code(s) found.

Odometer flashing

You need to specify which light is flashing. I'm assuming it's the engine light. It could be a range of things. You need to hook up an OBD II to your vehicle and check the fault code. An auto electrician can do this or you could buy an OBD II for around $200.

Hello, I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute and my engine light is illuminated and the car is over heating. What would you suggest is the problem?

Hello - FIRST
Get the codes read.
Go to your local auto parts store, typically they read the obd II codes for FREE! This will NARROW it down a little..

My 2001 mazda 626 had a rebuilt transmission in 2008,code P1744, what could be wrong, car runs fine

This code is for a mechanical fault in the torque converter solonoid. Something i would definately have checked out at a transmission shop. Hope this helps you.

2001 mazda 626 code p1744

P1744 - Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Position.

Either way the problem points to an internal transmission problem.
1. Drive it and see if the codes come back, and see if it is slipping in overdrive.

2. Check the transmission pressure in drive, with the overdrive on and the transmission slipping.

These transmissions have a high failure rate. Have seen internal transmission slippage that showed up in drive with the Overdrive (OD) switch on, but not with the OD switched off. It was related to the coasting clutch being on and off in that range. In that case, there was an internal mechanical transmission problem. We recommend a rebuilt transmission from the dealer and an external transmission cooler - the new rebuilt transmission will last longer.

Good luck (remember to rate this free answer).
