I have a 97 grand prix gtp that will start but wont hold an idl

I have a 97 grand prix gtp that will start but once its started itll run for a few seconds, then idle rough & shut off. On the other hand if u start it & step on the gas pedal a few times itll hold a idle 4 as long as I want. But then when i go to drive it, it will drive 4 about 500 ft then shut off!! need help

    I had the fuel pressure checked, maf sensor replaced, coil packs tested..... iac motor checked out good. I tried 2 drive it after replacin the maf sensor, it drove 4 a few minutes then shut off again. I drove it home rev'n up the engine & blew the motor. I jus got the motor replaced 2day... It drove 4 about an hour and started duin the same thing. Since its a different motor im thinkin it cant be the plugs or injectors.... idk wat it is but its really buggin me i need help would a clogged converter make the car do this? or what else could it be?

Bad fuel pump.- just replace it and your good to go!

Check ur idle air control valve (iacv) controls ur idle could be a number of things ,spark plugs,wires,fuel filter fuel pump.

1992 grand prix wont hold idle
I replaced a motor in a 97 and the engine was out for a few weeks and I never had a problem with an idle when I put it back together with a whole new engine. I would guess you forgot to plug something back in by the starter. Recheck everything you have done I think this is something simple.

If you have a GTP these engines use a hi output fuel pump. they use a fuel pump resistor located under the battery tray (look up from under the car) This resistor lowers the voltage to the fuel fump when not in boost mode. because of its locatoin it is prone to corrosion. if you bypass the wires and the engine starts and stays running replace the resistor

yep i seen it in happen .i was at a gas station a guy drove car to the gas station on empty.he fill his tank up .could not get it to crank .some cars you have to restart fuel pump when run out of gas. like chrysler.you use a scanner. but chervrolet you run low over heat damage the pump.it has to stay submerge gas to keep it cool. check fuel pump pressure.it should be 41 - 47 psi.

Rough idling in a 1999 Grand Prix GTP
If this problem doesn't happen every time i would not only change plugs but wires as well.The wires can move if they are loose or even heat damaged and interrupt the spark. If this doesn't help it sure won't hurt. Next look at the oxygen sensor and change the pcv valve. Then i would move unto cleaning/replacing the MAF sensor and possibly the throttle position sensor too. It sounds like you need a good tune up thats all.

97' Pontiac Gran Prix Won't Stay running
Known GTP problem.

You most likely have a bad fuel pump resistor, which controls 2 speeds of the fuel pump.

To check to see if this is the problem, there is a trick you can do and its very easy to do. Go to the attached link, and bend the tab my finger is pointing at and then plug it back in. If your car starts and runs fine, well we just solved the problem.

is this a supper cahrged grand prix if so check fuel pump resistor located behind right front head light or on fire wall its made of white ceramic has to wires going to it jump the two wire on the connection going to it if it runs longer then 15 min then replace resiustor.
