I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee with a power steering problem. I'll be driving down the road and all of a sudden it will stop working. A few seconds later, it comes back on and it does this repeatably while I drive. There are no leaks or whining noises, and the belt is not slipping and is tight. Also when the engine is idling, the pump doesn't seem to work until the rpm's are at a high idle. Can you help me out? Michael

Yeah Michael, try tightening the belt on it just a bit tighter. You may not hear slipping belt but it is slipping. But then you say it doesn't work at all at idle, sounds a bit more like a week pump or is too low on fluid. For fluid, just use GM trans fluid, it's cheaper and the same thing as expensive tranny fluid.

SOURCE: 02 Grand Cherokee High RPM start. Cuts out when driving

Ckean throttle plate inside throttle body...They tend to get dirtier than their counterparts in carbureted engines due to lack of fuel spray that kept them clean. If no luck with that, clean idle air control valve on TB. When doing this, don't turn the plunger, just clean with carb spray and replace. do not loose "o" ring seal.
Good luck

SOURCE: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission or transfer case

As I said, trans fluid keeps the internal components "alive"... Low fluid level can cause burning of internal clutches, premature hardening of seals (essential to proper transmission of fluid pressure) as well as lubrication of necessary gear components such as planetary gear set (which can cause whine etc. which you now have) All of these components rely upon a constant flow of fluid for both cooling and lubrication. Depending upon how low and how long these parts had interrupted fluid flow, directly influences how much damage was done. I take no joy in telling you that you may have damaged your unit, I'd be far happier if I could give you a quick, inexpensive fix. But based upon what you have said, If I was working hands-on with this problem, I would make the recommendation I've already made. There are pressure tests etc that can be done at a transmission shop to verify to some degree of certainty what is going on within your unit. Hopefully they may find something other than what I've said. At this point though, it is wise to have it checked out by a professional, before you become stranded at a time when you can least afford to be.

SOURCE: 2004 jeep grand cherokee idling problem. Revs motor 200 to 500 rpms higher while driving.

I had the exact same problem on my 04 GC. I put some Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner in from Wal-Mart and it seemed to fix the problems right away. Let me know.

While driving my Jeep will suddenly jerk and lose power for a few seconds then everything is fine. I was thinking some kind of sensor. Any ideas?

If everything is okay before and after each icidence I would suspect a fuel supply problem. Are filter and pipes all clear of detritus? Does it happen in corners, whilst accelerating or decelerating? Does it happen whilst cruising? When engine is hot or cold. Which engine do you have. Please add detail and resubmit the query

All warning lights(e.g oil flow, charging/brake etc) and gauges(e.g temperature, speed meter, rave counter etc) on the dashboard have suddenly stopped working on my jeep grand cherokee 1996. also all...

Could be a fuse, but to be sure take it into a shop and have them run a diagnostic on it. If they ask you to pay, call another shop. Or you can take it over to Auto Zone and they'll run one for you for free. If they can't tell you anything you'll have to bring it to a shop where they have more sophisticated diagnostic tools.

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee loses power and stalls when going up a steep hill on the freeway. It also several times the steering wheel has violently shaken when I hit a bump in the road. It almost felt...

You have two unrelated problems. the power loss can be from a variety of things. What you first need to do with that is have a scan done (many parts stores do that free)...then if you have codes stored, you at least have some direction to go in with that.
The shaking is called death wobble and also has many causes. The most common are bad ball joints or tires that are worn sufficiently so as to not have enough foreward momentum to not react to side loading from bumps. The same tire can still generally pass inspection but is no longer useful on your vehicle (usually with around two thirty seconds of remaining tread measured at the wear bars). Any wear in any of the front end steering components or bushings can also cause wobble...sometimes it is a cumulative effect of slight wear in several places totaling an unacceptable amount of overall play. If you just had brake work or new tires installed, sometimes improper torquing of the wheels can also cause that. If you don't see anything obvious have an experienced jeep tech look at it. It can be dangerous and is nothing to ignore or wait on.

My 1996 Jeep all of a sudden just quits while riding down the road and oftentimes backfires.

you are going to have to check for fuel pressure, usually cars only backfire when they are running lean. Push in on the shrader valve on the fuel rail, and have someone crank it for a second to see if you have fuel. Also check for spark.

My windshield wipers suddenly stopped working on my '96 Jeep Cherokee. I replaced a fuse that was bad, but they still don't work. Help!

if the fuse failed then that means one of few things...

1.) motor has failed causing excessive current draw
2.) circuit has direct short to ground
3.) short to ground that caused fuse failure is now an open

you need to check for power and ground at the wiper motor

1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0, 2w drive engine just stops running

Scan the computer for fault codes. Check that fuel filter is not obstructed. (if old, just change it) Most common problem is the crank sensor but do not just start swapping parts: it can cost a ton of $ and not cure anything!!
