hi my gf has a saturn ion automatic with just over 95000 miles on it. ... drove it today and the car initailly shift into first gear but would not shift into second or ... If you have inspected the shift linkage and found no missing or loose parts, then unfortunately an internal shift mode fork, syncro assembly,shift rail or possibly a snap ring has been damaged. This is not an easy fix on any vehicle and will require transmission removal to diagnose. Before the trans is removed, inspect the shift linkage while someone moves the gear selector to all gears. This would be the best case scenario, internal damage, of course, would be the worst.

I have a 97 SL2 and it has the typical slam into reverse, but also after a couple minutes of driving it downshifts... It stays there for like 3-5 minutes then runs fine afterwards... What is the problem?

broken gear in the trans. i hate to tell you but the trans needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

There is no 'adjustment' but you can check your linkage for security making sure nothing is loose or worn. Also check your fluid levels. If reverse is completely out and your starting to lose second you will probably need to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.

Ms Derry ,I would check the pair of shift cables and shifter itself before suspecting internal transmission problems.The cables attach to the shifter then runs to the linkage on the transmission.One cable is responsible for side to side movement as the other is for moving front to back(like 1st to second) Center console removal is fairly simple which requires mounting screw(4) removal on the front sides and in the rear cup holder.This gives you an opportunity to view the shifter and cable operation from above while this movement should also be appreciated at the transmission linkage meaning someone shifts the vehicle as another inspects proper movement at the transmission.If all this is actuating properly,you may need to tear down and inspect transmission but hopefully it can be rectified with external repairs mentioned...good luck

replace tranny filter and fluid, do not do tranny flush, could cause more problem. just filter and fluid change

I also have a 1999 sl2 saturn . I was having about the same problem but mine also did not want to go into reverse somtimes as well . Ichanged my fluid and filter and put in a good trans conditioner and just about all my trouble went away. The trans filter is just like a oil filter it just screws on the outside of the transmission . It is located down under the air filter housing, and the fluid plug is right on the bottom of the trans.

Saturn says and I quote

there transmission fluid is not to be changed after the first change at 6000 miles.

Now I say it should be changed at every 30000 miles. If changing out the fluid doesn't work then you need to go to a transmission repair shop.
