Start motor , no oil pressure showing on guage , check engine light on, when first noticsd checked oil ok, started motor 2-3 times no pressure on guage, 4 th time got good pressure reading light went out, drove 30 miles no problems, started up next day no pressure reading check engine on again, stays on and no presure raeding since thanks
Re: Start motor , no oil pressure showing on guage ,...
I would find and replace the oil pressure sending unit although oil pressure is ok the computer needs to know or else it will shut down engine and it seems like your oil pres. sending unit is starting to stick.

MAY---May-be you really have low oil pressure.. The way this sensor works is when you turn off the engine it closes to ground.. and when you start the engine.. the oil pressure opens it and the light goes out.. SO.. if the wire going to it is grounded out somewhere between the sensor and the dash board the light will stay on.. 3 choices.. 1. bad sensor (even though you replaced it) 2. wire is shorted to ground.. remove wire from sensor while engine is running.. light should go out. 3. you actually have really low oil presure. next.. after you have exuasted #1-2. you can remove sensor and install a real oil pressure guage and see what the pressure really is.. If you have very low or no oil pressure..1. Check oil level.(probably should have done this first) 2.pull oil pan and replace oil pump.. while you are there check a main bearing and a rod bearing for wear.. worn out bearings will cause low oil pressure. If you have good oil pressure install the pressure guage permanetly and forget about light.
The oil pressure switch or sending unit is a unit that receives an electrical signal showing what your cars oil pressure is.And yes it does partially does let you know when there is a problem somewhere in the oil system. For example if your filter gets clogged up your oil pressure will go down and then go up when you accelerate. If there was a leak in the system first you would probably see the leak And if the oil pump or oil pump shaft were to break you would have no oil pressure. So you can see the importance of having an oil pressure switch.I feel there are 2 guages that are important to watch are your oil guage and water temp guage they can tell you allot about how your car is operating.
oil pump gears inside the lower engine, or electrical. 1st make sure its full on oil, then sheck it with another pressure guage to confirm its not actuall pressure.
All I can think is that there is fault with the type of oil or the oil pump mechanism or oil pressure switch or oil pressure relief valve. When cold the oil is viscous and the pump will have little difficulty in maintaining adequate oil pressure. As the oil gets hot its viscosity is very much reduced and flows with ease and the pump has to work so much more effectively to maintain pressure. The speed of the pump is governed by engine revs so as you 'press on the gas' that pump whirls around making pressure. As soon as the engine revs drop the hot oil slips past the pump vanes and the pressure drops.
Remedy: Use a 5/40 or a 10/50 grade oil. These left number indicates viscosity when cold (5 is less viscous than 10 when cold) and the second number indicates viscosity when hot. If you live in one of the northern states and suffer very cold winters try 0/40 grade as this will cause less strain on the starter motor, battery and oil pump when starting in the cold. Try and choose a large figure (45 or 50) for the second number as this indicates a higher viscosity when hot, a good thing for older engines with greater wear and tolerances. I think it is no coincidence that the problem you have seen started immediately after you did an oil change and this should fix it.
If this results in no joy check out the pressure relief valve in the engine block: a tired or broken spring will not allow enough pressure build up.
The oil sender is probably OK but "if in doubt change it out".
All the above are relatively inexpensive but if they fail to solve the problem its time to look at the oil pump assembly. This should be accessibly once the oil sump cover on the bottom of the engine is removed. You'll need a workshop manual, some good tools and an extensive vocabulary of expletives to call on. Enjoy!
Check wiring to sensor on motor clean or replace. If that is OK.then consider: older high mileage cars will start to ware their bearing and causing more back pressure under load, you may have to live with it. Unless you what to rebuild motor.
Just guessing, but it sounds like you are loosing pressure from the bearings.....If you had the crankshaft journals cut, or if they were slightly out of round to begin with, this can happen. Cutting removes material...the journals on most modern engines are too thin to do this (same weight saving idea that gave us rotors that you need to throw away) After cutting, they go egg shaped. Not cutting and starting with out of round condition will essentially give you the same problem but may take a bit longer to fail. Of course, check all clearances and sealing points, but I believe that's where you will find the problem.
it sounds like your oil pressure sending unit may be plugged by whatever took your pressure down to 5-8 psi the first time. this is extremely low pressure as i am sure you know but at 30 psi your light should go off i would replace the sending unit if your oil pressure is holding 30
Hi there You should check the oil pressure sensor/wiring should be located around the oil filter area usually. If you can't see any obvious issues than post another question with you progress and ill help you work through it...
You either have a loose/worn engine bearing or a worn out oil pump, do not drive the car this way, you will cause serious damage to the whole engine. A oil switch is for a light, it turns on the light when oil pressure falls below about 10 PSI, a sending unit is for a guage that shows oil pressure with a scale, it may have numbers on the guage or just green and red, or high and low.
