You have to remove the steering wheel center cover/air bag assembly and replace the buttons as a assembly you can't just replace the bulbs.They are molded into the buttons.
have the trans. checked out to be sure if it was in the steering the noise would come from the front end and you would likely be feeling something in the steering wheel
the switches in the steering wheel do not have bulbs, the switches have LED which lights up.
so if the lights in the switches are not working you'll need to replace the switches.
I found the pesky little micro bulbs. They are intrument twist lock led found them at this site

1) Take the whole control out
2) Twist out the bad light
3) Twist back in the new one
4) REady ;) in less than 5 min

4X4? you have to disconnect steering shaft from steering column lock steering wheel with seat belt first, then remove power steering lines and then the 3 bolts that hold the gear box to frame rail, any problems write back please give feed back
