Ford escort
Guess what? This might be easy.
Escorts have a common problem, (so do a lot of cars), with PCV hoses that get mushy. The tube that connects the PCV comes from the top of the engine, off a vacuum tree at the rear (passenger compartment side). It starts out with a rubber elbow that connects to a plastic tube. This goes toward the front of the engine, over the top. Follow this tube to the front of the engine. At the end is the PCV , (PCV stands for 'positive crankcase ventilation' ), valve. Frequently the rubber elbow deteriorates until it allows a vacuum leak. This loss of vacuum messes up fuel and idle control but is not much of a factor above idle. To find a vacuum leak that is not obvious, with the engine idling, spray carburator cleaner around the intake and vacuum hoses, a bit at a time. If a significant leak exists, engine idle will change or the engine will smooth out. Pinpoint the leak.
If no leak can be found, the IAC, (idle air control valve), could be the problem. Can you get the engine to run okay by opening the throttle slightly? When you do this you are doing what the IAC is supposed to do. If you suspect the IAC, go buy one and put it on yourself. it is easy to replace and you can get one for about the same as the cost of professional diagnosis. If that does not fix the problem, then at least you have eliminated that and you have a new part! For more tips like this, check out my site, trustywrench.com. Good Luck!
