Periotically, only for about 5 minutes after starting my scion xa when the engine is cold, the idle is too low to keep the engine running. The idle is normaly around 1200rpm when starting it cold, but is only about 500rpm at these problem times. Once it has run for about 5 minutes then the rpm goes up to about 1000, then to 700 once it has warmed up completely. Idle control valve? Clean the intake? What? Any ideas?

I know you are looking to have the remote starter run a third time but I would say you need to look at your Fuel Pressure Regulator on the Scion. Sounds like it is not holding fuel pressure at the fuel rail and that is why it requires a third Crank
First you need to figure out WHY it stopped running. Was it no fuel? no ignition spark? A tune will not make a engine quit. Have the comp codes read at an auto store, its free.
under the bonnet on the radiator is an automatic fan, now if the radiator is low or you need to replace the coolant in it or top it up but the car may need a service and let them know the problem.

This video will show you how to replace a key fob battery for a 2004 2005 & 2006 Scion XA.
there's a possibility that the battery is run down. If it's the original battery, chances are you need to replace it. I'd have the alternator checked as well, however the most likely problem is a worn out battery. It's not uncommon for batteries that have been maintaining their charge through the warmer months to go bad once a cold weather comes through. As for the stinky exhaust, in your attempts to start the engine with a run down battery, the engine probably loaded up with fuel, thereby causing it to run rough and stink till excess fuel was expelled from the cylinders. Hope this helps.
