Tell me what kind of motor oil r you using.regular or synthetic.
This is EXACTLY what has happened to me this week. On Monday, I was driving up a hill and the car started stuttering at around 2500 rpm. I thought it might be the transmission, but, as long as I stayed below 2500 rpm it would go to the next gear. I took it too my father-in-law who hooked it up to his computer and it came back with 7 possible codes including the VTEC one. I have changed the serpentine belt and the plugs (which didn't look too terrible) and the same thing is happening. The check engine light will comes on immediately when the stuttering starts and stays on. I have just ordered a new gas cap because it was only 10 bucks and the current one requires a lot of extra effort to tighten-down completely. That may have been one of the 7 possible problems and I know how touchy Honda's can be about loose gas caps. I can sometimes get the engine to stutter/cut-back when revving the engine at idle. In first gear, the stuttering doesn't seem to happen very easily, but it consistently seems to happen in third and fourth gears at 2500-2700 rpm. I have 114,000+ miles and have had no major problems except for some rattling in the steering wheel when making sharp turns. The steering rattling improved when we changed the belt. My father-in-law said the power steering module was a little loose before we changed the belt. Hope someone out there can help me. I would like to keep this car going a while longer and I don't want to throw a bunch of money towards an incomplete solution.

Regular oil is what I use but my wife had a shop change it last time. I took the car to the shop today and they tested the vtec switches and checked ok. They can't get the car to run rough today. They are guessing it is the cam sensor that activates the vtec. $225 parts and labor to replace. I told them to do it, but they can't garuantee this is the problem because the scanner doesn't tell them the problem component exactly. any input would be good, thanks, John
I had the same code on my 2003 CRV, VTEC solenoid fault. A friend of mine that knows Honda's said after many miles using regular oil, the screen in the solenoid gasket will plug up causing the valve to starved for oil and malfunction. I just replaced the gasket with the new screen, turned off the code, problem solved. This CRV was new to me and I always use synthetic oil so don;t expect this to happen again since syn oil will keep it clean. I changed it by working blind over the engine on the left side, keeping oriented with a mirror, occassionally. Dale
