I got a 2007 jeep grand cherokee diesel and at times the service park assist will flash and the engine light will come on. a box forms around the gears on the display and it feels like it trannys slipping and its rough out of 1st gear. if you throw it in neutral then back to drive everything is fine again. After hours of research i found that you have to get your computer flashed. It if commom for many people and the dealership wont know what your talking about. so you have to lets them know!!!! else they have no clue
If by park assist you mean parking brake, just make sure the cables are free and that they are operating the rear brakes as they should. If you have a specific problem with them then ask. Generally only problems are a frozen cable, broken lever lock or rear brakes themselves needing replacement.

You can take it to your Jeep dealer and have the service department try to flash the computer. This may fix it. If not you will need to purchase a shift control module. They are about $ 590.00. This is a very common problem on the Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees. Hopefully you are under warranty still. If you ignore this problem this is what will eventually happen: You will be driving down the road and your vehicle will not want to go over 15 mph and it will shift erratically. Do not wait to correct this problem or you will regret it. Yes it is a very expensive part, but a computer in itself that the vehicle needs to function correctly.
SOURCE: what does "service park assist system" mean on my 2008 jeep?
The park assist system detects objects 59 inches or less in back of your vehicle, to warn u so u don't strike the object. I'm guessing that since the service park assist system comes on in the ice and snow, the monitor is detecting something (ice and snow covering the sensor). If u clean off the snow and ice, the message should shut off.
