My 2006 ION steering makes a clunking noise which can be felt through the wheel, esp. when turning slowly or simply rocking the steering wheel back and forth

Condition Some customers may comment on a clunk type noise coming from the front of the vehicle while driving during a turning maneuver. 1. Locate a large area (parking lot) where the vehicle can be turned in a tight circle. 2. Turn the steering wheel to the right and/or left all the way to the steering lock, then off the steering lock a 1/4 turn. 3. Drive the vehicle approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) in a circle, preferably over rough pavement or seams on the road surface. 4. Drive the vehicle straight ahead at idle speed while applying and releasing the brake pedal. Listen/feel the steering wheel for the clunk/noise condition. 5. If a clunk is felt in the steering wheel, the MOST likely cause is the I-shaft - not the steering gear. Continue with the correction. Correction DO THIS - Replace the intermediate shaft DON'T DO THIS - DO NOT lube the intermediate shaft Replace the existing intermediate shaft
it is a c/v joint when u turn in a circle u will here what side it is on .. it is usualy a job for some onethat knows what they are doind to replace for they are hard to get off .. they range from 40 up pluss labour
Either your steering gear failed or the connection joint between the steering wheel and steering rack input has broken. Since you have turned the wheel around in such a way, the clock spring for the air bag will also need to be replaced or you can have accidental airbag deployment or it can fail to deploy in a wreck.
Have the same problem mate, they have told me that me drivers side drive shaft has gone, a new one is around £100 pounds, but you could pick up a good second hand one for around £40 at a breakers yard.
What kind of noise, if growling and grinding check and replace wheel bearing. If thumping clunking type noise check steering intermediate shaft, makes noise in both directions.
Could be the ball joint. They are really easy to change it thats your issue. Jack the car and remove the tire. The ball joint will usually have three bolts or nuts holding it on strut. There is one tapered shaft that goes through your wheel hub assy and is held on by a castlated nut. Pull the hub back and forth and watch the ball joint.
