2002 Chevy Express Van makes a ping or pong sounding noise from gas tank. Fuel pump has been replaced by local shop. Had module changed 10 days after pump was changed to defeat another gremlin. Few weeks after replacing pump noticed this reoccurring sound along with check engine light. Codes tell me to replace fuel cap. Tried and had retested, codes still pres. Pumped started making death noise 2 weeks ago and died Christmas Eve. Why pumped failure again within 1 year?

One fuel filter is in the fuel pump of the Express Chevy 3500, which is used to push fuel or gasoline through the fuel line. The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. This fuel filter is a mesh or screen that prevents large foreign particles for entering the fuel pump. Access to the fuel filter is obtained by removing the fuel tank and then the fuel pump from the fuel tank.
Second Fuel Filter Location
The second fuel filter is within the fuel line itself. After the fuel pumps extracts fuel from the gasoline tank and into the fuel line, fuel flows through the line and through another filter on the driver's side of the Express Chevy 3500 under the front wheel suspension. This fuel filter cleans the small particles that escaped from the fuel tank.
Fuel Filter Types
The year of your Chevy Express 3500 determines what type of fuel filter is installed on the van. The fuel tank filter is always mesh or screen, but the fuel line filter can be of three different types. Two types are snap-on filters, while one type has clip-on ends.
Sounds like you got some bad gas. Be sure and let the station know right away. They may be on the hook to pay for repairs. Take the van to a shop and have the computer checked for trouble codes. The gas tank and lines may have to be flushed.
i had a similar problem and called the dealer during lunch hour. i talked to a mechanic, the distributor in these vehicles is plastic, and is prone to cracking.not just the cap but the body also, I have been taking the cap off and wiping the moisture out of the cap. or replacing the cap but the problem is I need a new distributor. just a cheep way to get rolling is cleaning the inside of the cap, especially when it is very damp or the outside temp changes alot during the day. good luck.
I have three of these vans, (206k, 335k, 443K miles) I ONLY USE GM PUMPS!!! any others i have tried are complete junk!...Second, make sure your tank is clean and fuel filter clean... I always use compressed air to blow any dirt away from the o ring seal before i remove the pump from the tank. You might consult with a radiator shop on what you might use to clean the inside of the tank. I have never cleaned mine, but i have replaced about 7 or 8 of these pumps. Even the GM pumps only last about 100,000 miles. i try to replace mine before they go out. i have never experienced a GM pump losing pressure, just all or nothing....Just make sure there is nothing obstructing the fuel flow and examine your inlet mesh on the bottom of the pump for any dirt build up...
