02 Durango with 5.9 motor. The SUV will not go

02 Durango with 5.9 motor. The SUV will not go into park and takes longer to shift from 1st to 2nd gear. I can shift through the gears but this does nothing to improve or correct shifting issue. I did have the recall performed about the shifting through the gears without using the break. Like to know what to look at or to expect before getting hosed for this repair?

My 2000 durango won't shift into drive.

If you mean you can't move the shifter lever at all? Then you have a problem with the interlock. Here is a write up on the problem:

FixYa Team,

I had solved my issue through the use of your networking, additional on-line help, and brainstorming with a family member and a friend who deals with transmissions. I also went to my local parts store to buy a repair book for my truck.
Our solution to this issue: the lap band that lets the gears move from 1st to 2nd has broken. This is a common issue from what I have gathered from all sources. The gearshift cable was ruled out due to the shifter lever on the trannyhousing would go into the proper position but the indicator on the dash still showed the position in reverse.
As stated I am able to drive the truck, have to start in "N", and it just takes longer to shift from 1st gear to the 2nd gear. I had even dropped the truck into low 1 and moved into 2 and the truck still took longer to make the switch. The truck will be going into the shop to perform the repairs as needed. If the solution is not what we say I will keep the team and everybody else informed of what the issue came to be. Cost of the "Lap Band will run me around $250.00. This is due to repairs and having the filters replaced while the repair is performed.
I want to thank everyone for their assistance in the brainstorming and networking. I like to learn about issues like this before going into a shop and get hosed over a $80.00 part or something of that nature. I do not perform this way in my constructon company by hiding things or by not telling someone and covering it up just to make more money than what the project really cost!!

Again, thanks everyone and I will keep everyone informed.

What shift from 1st to 2nd

I am asumin your saying that the transmission wont shift from 1st to 2nd gears. What this could be is either a low fliuid problem or an internal failure of the transmission. I believe the transmission govenor on those units can cause a bad hifting problem. Looks like your set for a tranny rebuild
