One day my 1997 dodge neon broke down. When this happened, It would not shift into first, and it made a very loud grinding noise. The clutch pedal didn't seem to do anything at the time (This was a while back and i forget some details). As i would try to shift into second, the car would start to move. My dad and I had to use second gear to get it home, because first gear didn't work at all. I've looked at some idea from sites, but really haven't got any ideas whats wrong with it. Also, my dad figures the car isn't worth fixing, but i believe it could be. If you have any ideas, It would be very helpful. Thanks-Ian

Somehow you have it stuck in two gears. If I remember correctly your shift mechanism is inside the unit. If so, you will need to remove the trans and the cover, then re-position the shift forks. If you get lucky, you may be able to free it up by wiggling the shift lever but I doubt it.
Do not run it 'till you manage to free it up or you can break a gear. If you removed shifter when working on it, first check that you put it back in correctly before tearing everything apart!

My 1995 Ford pick-up did that to. You should give it about 10 seconds from pressing the clutch to going into reverse.Dealer said not to put it in reverse to quick.give 10 seconds.

This is most likely an issue with the clutch slave cylinder... Typically, if the clutch master cylinder fails, the clutch pedal will not return and [usually] sinks to the floor under it's own weight. If the pedal returns, it's typically a clutch slave cylinder issue. The best thing to do is to replace both cylinders so that you'll not have to worry about either cylinder failing again.
