Passlock I reset.

1. Attempt to start the car, let it stall, but DO NOT turn the key off! Leave it in RUN.
2. Wait 10 minutes or until the Theft Sys light glows steady instead of blinking.
3. Do not turn the key off, but start it immediately.
4. This should reset your Passlock system.

PASSLOCK I or II DISABLEMENT

The following is a procedure to disable Passlock I or II Systems for vehicles
in which remote start/stop system installations are required. This procedure
is required because a remote start system will not function with the current
Theft Deterrent System (Passlock) which is included on many 1996 and up GM
vehicles.

Please note that this modification is intended to be used only in conjunction
with the installation of a remote start/stop system and does not provide a
procedure to install a remote start/stop system.

CAUSE
If an attempt is made to start a vehicle by a means other than a key rotation
in the ignition switch, the Body Control Module (BCM) will interpret this
start as a vehicle theft and disable the fuel injectors.

CORRECTION
A minor wiring modification may be made to allow the vehicle to be started
remotely. This modification includes adding a switch to allow the customer to
select ?ON? to allow remote starting or ?OFF? for normal Passlock operation.

CAUTION: When this modification is performed and the switch is set to the ON
position, the theft deterrent feature will be disabled. When the theft
deterrent is disabled the SECURITY/THEFT SYSTEM telltale will light up
indicating that the theft deterrent system is NOT functioning.

PASSLOCK MODIFICATION
Refer to appropriate GM service manuals and/or SVMQP Electrical Guideline
Manual for instruction on splicing and electrical connections.
1. Select a suitable on-off switch (see note below) which will be used to
disable/
enable the Passlock System. Mount the switch in a location such that it is
accessible to the driver and will not interfere with normal vehicle operation.

NOTE: This is an extremely low current circuit (approx. 7mA), it is therefore
very important that a high quality, low energy, fast acting switch be
utilized for this application.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
3. Locate the Main Ignition Switch Harness in the Column. GM's Passlock
System wires exit the Ignition Switch Tumbler together and then join with the
Main Ignition Switch Harness. (See http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/ or
http://64.85.6.118/diagrams/diagrams.asp and select your Make, Model and
Year for wire colors and clues on the quickest way to access these wires.)
4. Locate the Yellow Passlock Data Wire which is included in a bundle of
three tiny (20 GA) wires wrapped in friction tape.
Cut this wire and splice a 0.5mm2 (20 GA) yellow wire to each end of the cut
wire.
Keep wire length to a minimum. Route modification wires clear of moving parts.

Connect the yellow wires to the switch such that the contacts are OPEN when
the switch is in the ON position.
5. Turn modification switch to the OFF postion (contacts closed).
6. Start vehicle to verify normal operation. If engine ?cranks but will not
start"
recheck the switch position (contacts should be closed), wire connectors and
modification wiring.

SWITCH OPERATION

To enable remote start:
Start the engine with the ignition key (modification switch must be in the
OFF
position). Turn modification switch to the ON position (contacts open). The
SECURITY/THEFT SYSTEM Telltale will light up indicating that the Passlock
System is inoperative.
Once the SECURITY/THEFT SYSTEM telltale has been on for at least 5 seconds
the vehicle can be turned off and then remotely started.

To disable remote start:
The Passlock System can be reactivated by turning the modification switch OFF
(contacts closed). Vehicle can either be running or off when this is done.

Please note that the VCM/PCM will record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
related to the security system when the modification switch is in the ON
position (circuit open). This is due to the way that the VCM/PCM interprets
this condition.

NOTICE
Any condition which removes battery power from the Vehicle Control
Module/Powertrain Control Module (VCM/PCM) (e.g. dead battery, disconnected
harness connectors, etc.) will prevent the vehicle from being restarted. If
the engine exhibits a ?cranks but will not start? symptom, place the
modification switch in the OFF (contacts closed) position. This will
reactivate the Passlock System and allow the vehicle to be started with the
ignition key

SOURCE: massage, pass key fault

there is a micro chip inside the head of the igntion key, when you put the key in the igntion the sensor inside the steering colunm will read the resistance of the micro-chip. If there is a match the engine will start. If for some reason the sensor will not read the micro chip the system will think some is stealing the car. I would try another key 1st, if this persist, the module will need to be replaced. Start with a new key, its cheaper.
You'll need to go a GM store parts departement with the old key, drivers license & registration for the dealer to cut a new key.

Mine did the same thing. I had to replace the ignition switch and haven't had a problem since. The inside wears out and don't make a conection to the chip in your key.

SOURCE: pass key fault is brinking

So the Security light is on or flashing in your vehicle and you are looking at 1 of 3 things. Either the vehicle won't crank over and start, It cranks but dies in a few seconds, or your vehicle shuts off while driving scaring the **** out of you. You have now experienced GM's worst security system ever created. GM's security, also known as Passlock Passkey or Vats.

There are 3 parts in this system:

1.The CHIPKEY
Normally a black resister chip in key which "communicates" to the lock cylinder. Sometimes is hidden in the plastic part of keys in new models. Same concept, might say PK1 PK2 PK3 PL or something similar to that. The newer ones work on frequency. Same thing tho.

2.The LOCK CYLINDER
Inside there are pins that read the chip in the key or the part that reads the frequency on new models. This then "communicates" to the TDM)

3.The TDM
Theft Deterrant Module-Sometimes called the "computer" or "brain". This is the part that sends the signal (**NOTE**) to your car and allows your car to start or continue running depending on your type of system.
If any of these parts are not communicating properly, your SECURITY light will come on and shut down your vehicle. The idea being, that without the chipped key or FOB key, the vehicle wont start and cant be "hotwired" or stolen. Pretty nice when working, but these systems are flawed and the average life is 6-10 years. Every single aspect of this system is expensive to replace and can only be worked on by "authorized" GM service men with out voiding warrenty. Most garages dont even touch them and if they do,
they will sell you every part they can before "fixing" the problem

*QUICK FIX TRICKS*
1st trick
Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down with use and so do the keys causing the security to fail.

2nd trick
(if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my Buick for more than a year. Remember this is a temporary fix... If its shutting down while running, I'm sorry I have no quick fix...
*PERMINANT FIX*
Well since the lifespan of these systems are so short, and are extremely expensive to fix, and in my opinion far worse of a threat to owners than theives, my only perminant suggestion is to eliminate it completely. After a year of 10 minute tricks and a "key bypass" that lasted 2 months. I have only one good suggestion. After surfing the web for hours thru forums and websites i came across http://newrockies.com/passkey to the starter or injectors and so on. Thus eliminating the ENTIRE system COMPLETELY. I came upon a fork in my road. A TDM for $600 in my $1000 car or the $200 bypass. Or throw my car away. Lets say i now drive a Buick with the chip ripped out of the key and the TDM sitting in my glovebox for show
and tell. If you have any questions or anything else. Comment on this post
and i'll get an E-mail to reply to you. If you do choose to buy the bypass,
i have pictures of what a TDM looks like and will definately help you when
installing the newrockies bypass. Good luck

My 2001 pontiac ssei says to service theft system

I would take it to a dealer and have the ignition switch looked at, That is either pass key (pk stamped in key) or pass key 3 (pk3) and the ignition switch is probably having trouble reading to key to disengage the anti theft system, eventually it wont let the car start, and it never happens when your home!
