The transmission range sensor aka neutral safety switch is located underneath the air filter on top of the transaxle and very easy to access. Replace this part (around $50) and it will solve your problem.
What happens is this, when your tranny warms up, it disperses heat to the sensor switch and if its faulty or worn out, will send faulty relays to the transmissiom computer module (TCM) and makes the transmission shift irratically (OD to 3rd and back while driving at freeway speeds). You tranny is not overheating like most people believe, its the switch. Mechanics are telling alot of people that their tranny needs replaced. Watch Out For These People!! They only want your money!!

That is right I was haveing the same problem with my 99 mazda 626 with 139,000 miles. It started shifting crazy. Come to find out that alot of the mechanics wanted me to think my tranny was on its way out! But I showed them different. It was the transmission range sensor switch. It cost like $40 at advance auto parts. I tried to clean the original one but the problem came back. So I replaced the swich and the problem is gone! Also they dont call it a transmission range sensor in the parts stores, Its called a Neutral saftey switch! Same thing, but different prices at the dealer and parts stores. The dealer wants $70 dollars for the part!

Same exact thing happened to me. If you use a diagnostic code reader, you will be getting a p708 code. That is the definite tell tale sign it is only that neutral safety switch that needs to be replaced. It cost me $20 new on amazon. Shop around, you can get it cheaper than what others are saying they got it for. It takes about 15 minutes to replace, you just need to loosen and lift up the air filter compartment. My tranny is as smooth as butter. I bought the car for only $900 because the previous owner was probably told that the tranny needed a rebuilt costing thousands of dollars.

Now i dont know a lot about automatics especially modern ones with all this fancy electronics thats used nowdays but i think its a fault with the temperature sensor for the gearbox. But where its located and what it looks like i have no idea it could even be mounted inside the gearbox .Sorry not a very good answer from a mechanic but?? very few of our europeon cars come with auto transmission .Evan when i do know whats wrong i cannot buy the parts for the gearbox as only re-con boxes supplied by the dealer so best advice is to try a specialist in auto box repairs only .PS some of my best students when i used to teach mechanics many moons ago were the girls so no excuses like iam only a girl please

This could be as simple as a bad transmission temperature sensor or a Neutral Safety Switch. Have the Neutral Safety Switch checked out first because the Transmission Temp. Sensor is fairly expensive.

Code 0708 in Ford Contour 1997

Trouble code P0708 means:Transmission range sensor circuit high input .
Other words the "neutral safety switch". it may have gone bad or the wire harness is damaged. It's mounted on top of the transmission where the gear selector cable connects to the transmission. Good luck and hope this helps.

Your "transmission high input sensor" is also known as a "neutral safety switch". It depends on you trans (auto, or standard) as to the location. Either way, it's a simple and inexpensive repair.
